Okay, the joke is over. Mother Nature has turned up the heat and it is not even August yet or anywhere near it. But many have been seeking air conditioners, or doing extra shopping in air conditioned stores. Either way I hope you all can find a comfortable place to be and are drinking plenty of fluids.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Jesse Herman, who celebrated his day July 4; Jonathan Watson on July 5; Jonathan Polleys partied on July 6; July 7 was the day for Parker BenDavid, and to Matthew Fish, who celebrates his day today, July 9.

Fourth of July was a great day for everyone that I know. We for the 11th year hosted the Colonial Navy of Massachusetts in our yard. They arrive on the eleven o’clock boat and they come to enjoy Randy Walpole’s chowder, our stuffed quahaugs, and littlenecks on the half shell that Ralph and my brother Frank dig the day before. We refer to them as seagulls as there is little left after they leave, which as we all know is a big compliment. It is always a joy to see them and a pleasure to listen to them play their instruments and sing.

Congratulations to Andy and Shannon Smith, who are the proud parents of a baby boy. Andrew Charles von Schilling Smith Jr. was born July 1 at 12:53 a.m., weighing 7 pounds, 8 ounces. Andrew has a big sister, Addie, who has been visiting the Island since her birth but was joined up with parents and her new brother this week. Congratulations to all.

For the rest of the summer the Edgartown Lighthouse is open daily from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. A small donation is requested if you are not a member of the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, stewards of the light. If you can climb, the stairs to the top for a panoramic view of Edgartown, Chappy and the inner and outer harbors, it sure is worth a lot more. Be sure to bring your camera for priceless pictures and memories!

This Sunday is the lovely Legacy of Learning brunch at the Boathouse. This Edgartown library fundraiser will honor Ted Morgan with a lifetime achievement award. Judges also chose three winners from 60 student essays. Grand Prize of a netbook computer went to seventh grade student Gabriella Hoxsie.  Fifth grade student Ennis Foster and third grade student Lukah Viera were runners-up.

For those of us who remember Claudette Colbert and Shirley Temple, there is a showing Monday, July 12 of their film Since You Went Away (1944) at 8 p.m. in Vineyard Haven at the Katharine Cornell Theatre. Tickets are discounted for Martha’s Vineyard Museum and MV Film Society members at $5, and $8 for general attendance.

Also, those wonderful eighth grade Carry In-Carry Out signs have again been placed at all the State Beach entrances both in Edgartown and Oak Bluffs, and for the most part beachgoers are doing just that.

Vineyard and Caribbean youth were part of the Stone Soup for the World Youth Summit here last week to work toward a more sustainable future.

We have our friends Robert and Carrie Stanley here with their children, Robbie, Cathleen, and Connor. Carrie and I met at Village Fair when she was here for the summer. We became fast friends and have stayed that way all these years later. They live in Princeton, N.J. and they love the Island. Carrie knows it very well and she has a list of things to do with the kids so they will know the Island as much as she does. Isn’t it always amazing how visitors do more things than we Islanders do. They are constantly on the go and going places I never think to go.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
