We had excellent hot weather over the long holiday weekend just the way it should be for the Fourth. Ted Morgan, down in Edgartown, organized and marched in his 41st Independence Day parade and it was well attended. As was Woollcott and Leah Smith’s party the night before. About 100 people took part in the evening’s festivities.

Roger Blake, of North Tisbury, reports that business has been quite brisk at his “pie gazebo,” where he sells homemade pies daily. On Saturday he started out with 100 freshly baked pies and by 4 p.m. there were none left to sell.

Doris Anton, of New York city and Tiah’s Cove Road, has arrived for the season. She had house guests over the 4th of July weekend, Marge Bruno and her daughter, Lillian Marcucci. Marge is Doris’s friend from college.

Darcy Neago and her husband Jason and their son Tristan, of Cameron, N.C., have been visiting her father, Tom Hodgson, on Tiasquam Road. She reports that her sister Lucy gave birth to her second son, Brady, on June 15. They live in Chatham, N.J., with her husband Chris and oldest son Cooper. Darcy’s mother in law Gale from Massillon, Ohio visited them over the long holiday weekend.

Bob and Filis Casey arrived last week at their Deep Bottom Pond home to begin preparations for the arrival of the guests at the wedding of their daughter, Marisa, at their Pond Road home tomorrow. The first to arrive was Marisa and her fiancé, Paul Wilson, both from Brooklyn, N.Y. Paul’s parents, Susie and Steve Wilson, and his sister, Sonia, first-time Island visitors, also arrived from Virginia and are staying with other members of their family in Vineyard Haven. The bride and bridegroom will return to Brooklyn later next week and in the fall will spend their honeymoon in South Africa.

Jim and Holly Coyne, of Look’s Pond Road, had a busy holiday weekend at their house. They hosted the newlyweds Kate and Ryan Coyle and their friends, Lauren and Rob Morse; all of their guests are from New York city.

Our daughter Nicole Alley and her husband Arsen Hambardzumian, of East Taunton, arrived on Friday to spend the long weekend with her parents. Also son Sam had two of his friends visit him, Casey Ryan of Haverill and Evan Ruddock, of Boxford, classmates of his when he was in college.

Norman and Marylou Perry, of Vineyard Meadow Farms, hosted a lot of family for the holiday weekend: their son Mark and his wife, Karlin, and their children, Morgan, Courtney, Christen, and Mason from West Redding, Conn., their son Scott, his son Taylor, from Falmouth, and their dog, Benjamin. Norman reported that it was a full house but a wonderful time.

Richard and Ina Andre, of Old County Road, returned home last weekend from a trip to Germany to visit her parents. Their son Nicolas stayed with Oma and Opa for a month. Richard reports that they enjoyed watching the World Cup soccer matches and Nicolas will get to visit his many friends.

Tamara and Jonathan Thornton, of Buffalo, N.Y., arrived at the Plakins estate on Middle Road last week. Their daughters, Lydia and Dora, came for up for the Fourth of July as did Art Ziller and Linda Marsh, also from Buffalo. They held a party for close friends on Monday and Jonathan served his famous clam chowder.

Jill Carlton and her husband Pete Karman, of New Haven, Conn. arrived yesterday to spend the holiday week at her State Road home.

Jane Coakley and Max Skjöldebrand returned from Dubai over the Fourth of July weekend to take up permanent residence at their home in town.

Charlie Kernick, of Edgartown Road, reports that they had a flurry of visitors, his fiancée, M’lady Stevie, is here from Hillsborough, N.C., for the week. His son Tyler, his wife Crissy and his granddaughters Anabella and Alexandra were here for the July Fourth family picnic at Harry and Debby Athearn’s house. Next door to him Aanya Friess’s son Joel, his wife Liz and son Rich are here from Albuquerque, N.M., for the month of July, and their other son Will and his family from Washington D.C. arrived on Tuesday to spend the week.

Vicki Bijur and her husband Ed Levine, of New York city, have been vacationing at her mom’s place in Tiah’s Cove. Ed is busy writing another book and Vicki plans to bring her mom up for an August visit.

Will and Leslei Monast, of Waldron’s Bottom Road, hosted a party for their daughter Sarah and her husband, Elton Nasamento at their home Monday afternoon. They were married last August at Lambert’s Cove Beach.

Susan Wilson reports that the Martha’s Vineyard Museum will host the 12th annual Evening of Discovery on Thursday at 6 p.m. on Tower Hill in Edgartown.

Patti Linn, of North Tisbury, reports that Sundaes on Saturdays are back by popular demand at the West Tisbury Congregational Church. Cool off this summer with an array of your favorite sundaes and ice cream flavors. It’s the best ice cream in town! The July event will be held tomorrow at the church from noon to 4 p.m. They have scheduled another for August 7. The West Tisbury Congregational Church will offer its third and very popular summer sale of collectibles and treasures on the church grounds in the center of town on Saturday, July 24. The sale will begin at 9:30 a.m. and continue until 3:30 p.m. The rain date will be on Sunday, July 25, between 1 and 4 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the preservation efforts of the historic church. Meghan Wallace reports that the winners are of the 2010 Martha’s Vineyard Magazine annual competition are in and this town did very well, winning in eight categories: Best fitness center, Vineyard Tennis Center; best yoga class; Megan Grennan, best live band or musician, Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish; the Granary Gallery for best art gallery; State Road for best fine dining; Fella Caters for best caterer.

Runners-up include Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary for best nature walk, Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society Livestock Show and Fair for best summer event, and Fella Caters for best clambake.

Al DeVito, reports that the police chief selection committee, Hasty Runner, Bob Wasserman, David Merry and Pierce Kirby, will hold a public meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The committee is actively soliciting the opinions of fellow townspeople with regard to the characteristics you see as being important in our chief. Paddy Moore, of Alley Way, reports that tomorrow morning from 9 until 11 a.m. over at the Howes House, Sydney Asbury, chief of staff to Gov. Deval Patrick, will meet with the Martha’s Vineyard Democrats to present recent developments concerning the governor’s policies and budget, and to answer questions on issues of concern.

On July 7, 1946: “Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Duys and their daughter Rosemarie and son Gerrit Jr. moved from the Jennie Shoemaker farm on Tea Lane in Chilmark where they had been living for the past nine years to their new home on Music street. They have recently completed the purchase of the former Jerry Mayhew house, barn and several acres of farm land. Moving along with them is their niece Mrs. Marie Jacqueline Van den Heuvel who has been making her home with them since her arrival in this country from Brussels, Belgium several months ago.”
