Graduates

Scott Cleary of Edgartown graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon, a coeducational boarding school for students in grades 9 to 12, during the school’s commencement exercises on May 23.

On Sunday, May 30, Meredith Curtis of Edgartown, daughter of Norman and Celeste Stickney, graduated from Brown University in Providence, R.I., with a bachelor of arts degree in economics. She returned home this week before heading to Madison, Wisc., where she will be working for Epic Systems in the quality assurance department.

Melanie Marie Devaney, of Edgartown, was awarded a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from Merrimack College on Sunday, May 23.

Alanna Echlin, of Vineyard Haven, has received a bachelor of arts degree from Simmons College.

Cassaundra Evelyn Gaines of Edgartown recently graduated from Cedar Crest College with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology. Ms. Gaines earned community service and leadership awards at Cedar Crest, was president of the Great Outdoors Club and competed with the Cedar Crest College cross-country team. She plans to pursue graduate work for her master’s degree in marriage and family therapy at Drexel University in Philadelphia. She is the daughter of Debra and Warren Gaines, and granddaughter of Sandra and Greg Lucas.

Miranda Elizabeth Hill of Oak Bluffs has graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from Stonehill College in Easton.

Katherine Lolley of Vineyard Haven has graduated from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine with a master of public health degree.

Talia Luening of Vineyard Haven graduated from Lesley University with a bachelor of arts degree in liberal studies.

Lacey J. McIntosh, daughter of Bruce and Cynthia McIntosh of Edgartown and Falmouth, was awarded the degrees of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and master of public health in the graduating class of 2010 at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. Commencement ceremonies were held on May 22. As class president, Dr. McIntosh delivered the commencement speech to the graduating class and their friends and families. She was presented with the alumni association award for distinguished student and ambassador for the college of medicine.

She will be interning at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, prior to a residency in radiology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. She plans to pursue a career in interventional oncology.

Matthew Mincone of Vineyard Haven has graduated with a degree in sociology (criminal justice) from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Grace Lee Murphy of Vineyard Haven was awarded a bachelor of arts degree in administration of justice during Salve Regina University’s 60th commencement on Sunday, May 16.

Molly Peters was graduated from Bard College in New York on May 22, a major in both photography and Italian Studies.

Her senior thesis in photography was a show of her photographs, The New Familiar. Her photos can be seen online at mollypetersphoto.com. Her senior thesis in Italian Studies was a translation of the fantastic short stories in Il Signor Dido, by Alberto Savinio.

Molly is the daughter of Eric Peters of Vineyard Haven and Elizabeth Peters of Belmont, Massachusetts.

Marion Courtney Santos of Vineyard Haven has graduated from Framingham State College with a master of science in nursing degree.

Samantha Taylor Schwager of West Tisbury graduated on May 29 from Bowdoin College with a bachelor of arts degree, with a major in sociology and minor in psychology

Elizabeth Tybout Sinnett of Chilmark graduated from Bard College on May 22 with a bachelor of arts degree.

Karen Swift-Shannon of Vineyard Haven has graduated from Excelsior College with a bachelor of science in nursing.

Curry College awarded an undergraduate degree to Jessica Marie Walsh of Tisbury on Sunday, May 16, at its commencement ceremony in Milton.

Timothy Joseph Walsh of Vineyard Haven graduated from Stonehill College with a bachelor of science in business administration degree.

Jaime Billings of Oak Bluffs and Zoe Fisher of Aquinnah were named to the Roger Williams University dean’s list for the spring semester.

Dana Anderson of Vineyard Haven, a junior majoring in marketing, has been named to the dean’s list at Bentley University for the spring 2010 semester.

Ella Barnette of Edgartown achieved dean’s list for the 2010 spring semester at Lasall College. Ms. Barnette, a member of the class of 2012, is majoring in fashion and retail merchandising.

Krista BenDavid of Oak Bluffs has been named to the dean’s list at the University of New Hampshire for the spring semester, earning honors.

Christina Colley, daughter of Carlos and Joanne Colley of Oak Bluffs, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester at Saint Michael’s College. Christina is a psychology and elementary education major.

Kathleen Coulter of Edgartown has been named to the dean’s list at the University of New Hampshire for the spring semester, earning honors.

Caitlin Crossland of Edgartown was named to the University of Massachusetts Boston dean’s list for the spring semester.

Max Currier, class of 2010 at Connecticut College and a resident of West Tisbury, has been named to the dean’s honors list.

Kathryn DeBettencourt of Oak Bluffs, a member of the class of 2010 at Providence College, has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester.

Hilary Dreyer was named to the spring dean’s list at William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y. She is the daughter of Stephanie and William Dreyer of West Tisbury.

Perry Dripps of Chilmark has been named to the dean’s list at the University of New Hampshire for the spring semester, earning highest honors.

Jane Geller, a senior economics and sociology major at the University of Colorado, Boulder, has been named to the dean’s list for spring semester.

Jane graduated from CU-Boulder this past May and is residing in Denver. She is the granddaughter of Marvin (Mickey) Geller, former member of the Martha’s Vineyard Commission.

Benjamin Hopkins, class of 2013 at Connecticut College and a resident of Vineyard Haven, has been named to the dean’s high honors list.

Daniel K. Kaeka of West Tisbury has been named to the dean’s list at Western New England College for the spring semester of 2010. Mr. Kaeka is a sophomore majoring in pre-pharmacy.

Ashley Ledford of Vineyard Haven has been named to the dean’s list for the spring term at Curry College.

Alicia Maciel of Vineyard Haven was named to the University of Massachusetts Boston dean’s list for the spring semester.

Julia MacNelly of West Tisbury was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Scripps College in Claremont, Calif.

Nicole Mercier of Edgartown has been named to the dean’s list for spring 2010 at Salem State College.

Kia Minor of Oak Bluffs was placed on the dean’s list at Framingham State College.

Kimberly Montanile of Vineyard Haven has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Sarah Nelson of Vineyard Haven has been named to the dean’s list at the University of New Hampshire for the spring semester, earning highest honors.

Whitney F. O’Brien, of Vineyard Haven, has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester at the University of Vermont. O’Brien is a first-year environmental studies major in the Rubenstein school of environment and natural resources.

Brian Spiro of Oak Bluffs has been named to the dean’s list for spring 2010 at Salem State College.

Nica Sylvia of West Tisbury, a sophomore majoring in civil engineering, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

James Todd has been named to the dean’s list for the second semester of his freshman year at Villanova University. He is majoring in English and secondary education.

Zachary Waller has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Cornell University. He is the son of Steven and Pat Waller of Edgartown.

Other Achievements

The Cape Cod Foundation announced its annual scholarship recipients June 1 at the Cotuit Center for the Arts. Among the recipients was Rebekah Nivala of Martha’s Vineyard, who received the Nancy Schofield Fadely Music Scholarship.

At a special ceremony held recently at the Massachusetts State House, Islander Olivia Gross and 112 other graduating high school seniors from across the state each were awarded a $1,000 college scholarship by Comcast. Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray and state legislators helped to present the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarships which recognize students who have shown leadership skills, academic achievement and a commitment to community service.

Benjamin Syslo of Chilmark was awarded a scholarship grant for his leadership, academic excellence and community involvement by the Former Agents of the FBI Foundation. Benjamin attends Bridgewater Sate College and qualifies for the scholarship as the grandson of former Special Agent Michael Syslo.

William Kadison was named to the honors list at Tabor Academy in Marion this past semester. Just finishing his freshman year, William is the son of David and Christine Kadison of Vineyard Haven.
