In Asking for It, a one-woman play written and performed this weekend at the Yard by Joanna Rush, young Bernadette O’Connell, former Outstanding Catholic of the Year, puts her religious vocation on hold and follows her fierce libido, but her sexual miseducation leaves her vulnerable to the twisted testosterone-filled world of her new life in the Big Apple.

Presenter and seasonal resident Monina von Opel has previously produced for the Yard performances by Lemon Andersen, Reno, Staceyann Chin, and an all-star cast including Tony Shalhoub, Brooke Adams and Robert Brustein for Spalding Gray’s Stories Left to Tell.

This year, she brings Broadway veteran Joanna Rush. Asking for It is a coming of age story about a feisty dancer who takes on New York, directed by Tony nominee Lynne Taylor-Corbett. It is described as a joyful kaleidoscope of faith and femininity, repression and redemption, humor and humility, spiced with dance and song and filtered through the prism of humor.

Performances are Friday, July 23, at 6:30 p.m. with dinner following the show (tickets are $75 to $150, including dinner with cast), and Saturday at 8 p.m. (tickets are $15 to $50). There is a edited family matinee on Saturday at 4 p.m.; evening shows are not appropriate for young children.
