The Vineyard Playhouse continues its Shakespeare-out-of-doors tradition this summer by presenting an all time audience favorite, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This production opened on July 15 and runs through August 15 at the Tisbury Amphitheatre at the Tashmoo Overlook on State Road in Vineyard Haven. Performances are Wednesdays through Saturdays at 5 p.m. plus Sunday August 15 at 5 p.m.

Playhouse chairman, actor and doctor Gerry Yukevich described it this way: “Clear evidence of another world out there is patently manifest in M.J. Bruder Munafo’s delicious rendering of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream in the gladed glory of the Tisbury Amphitheatre.

“Playing . . . in a forest just outside Athens (I mean Vineyard Haven), this hilarious rollick weaves the human and the supernatural into a gossamer tapestry dazzling enough to zap you on the spot — Poof! — into a True Believer.

“Prepare for a 90-minute abduction of your heart and your imagination.

“While under the spell, you’ll see the passions of a quartet of scheming lovers hijacked by the most quirky and conniving Robin Goodfellow ever to scale the trees and strut the ether, all the while riffing on an enchanted reed. Simultaneously, a motley posse of Athenian rustics find their plans turned topsy-turvy by rascal Puck’s industrial-strength fairy nectars.

“And Queen Titania, in all her effluvial finery, is as luscious and lusty as fairy royalty might dare to be this side of a donkey stable. (Bottom’s stallion whinnies and snorts at moments of excited equestrian passion are hilarious — the old bark of the stately Tisbury oaks was seen to quiver with laughter.)

“All the while, Titania’s winsome cadre of wood sprites amuse her with giggling games of tag, mystic lullabies, and frolicking jigs and two-steps. The vision of enraptured innocence is transcending and joyous.

“In short, this is a definitive Dream. The exquisite costumes alone (by the inspired Chrysal Parrot, in her first time designing for the playhouse) are worth the price of admission ($15 for adults, $10 for those 18 and under).

“Don’t sleep through the summer and miss A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
