Beaches around Vineyard Haven harbor are open again as of noon Tuesday, assistant health inspector Maura Valley confirmed, after results from water samples taken yesterday cleared the water as safe for swimming.

The beaches from Owen Park to Ralph Packer’s dock had been closed since Saturday morning due to concerns about fecal coliform bacteria.

Storm damage to the pumping station behind the restrooms at the Tisbury Stop & Shop parking lot caused sewage to leak from the pump into the harbor overnight on Friday. The pump was repaired on Saturday morning and the streets hosed down, but beaches were closed as a precaution and tests verified that there were unacceptable levels of fecal coliform bacteria, which can cause illness if swallowed, in the waters. Daily tests showed a lesser but still unacceptable amount of the bacteria there, keeping the area closed to swimming until this morning’s results, Ms. Valley said.

Signs warning swimmers off are being taken down and lifeguards will return to their usual duties.
