What can I say about the weather this week, except that it is August? Let’s see what Mother Nature has in store for us this month.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Jared Livingston, who celebrated his day July 31, and to Paige Herrick, who celebrated her day August 5.

Special birthday wishes go out to Jane Barbini and Barbara Magnuson, who celebrated their day August 1, Derek Avakian on August 3, and to Pam Dolby and Floyd Norton, who celebrated their day August 5.

Congratulations to David Welch and Trina Brown on the birth of their daughter, Camden Elaine. Camden is the granddaughter of Don and Kathy Welch of Edgartown and Pat and Cindy Brown of Oak Bluffs.

We wish Paul Condlin a very happy retirement and offer a big thank you for many years of his dedication to our town in keeping it safe and a great town to live in. Paul will be feted Saturday night by many of his friends and family. Paul will now be able to spend more time with his wife, Linda, and his grown children, Alicia and James, but most of all he will spend more time with his grandchildren, Kiefer and Darby. Congratulations, Paul, and may you have a very happy retirement.

Congratulations to Tony Bettencourt, who will now be our chief of police. Tony also has served many years on the force, and we look forward to his leadership with our community.

The Rotary Club will hold its annual pancake breakfast on Sunday, August 8, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Anchors down by Memorial Wharf in Edgartown. The breakfast is in view of the Chappy Ferry, so folks commuting won’t have far to go! It’s $8 for adults, and $4 for kids 10 and under, for all you can eat pancakes, orange juice, milk, coffee, bacon and sausage.

This is one of the Rotary Club’s signature events, and we would like to be able to raise as many funds as possible to support Island organizations such as the food pantry, the hospital, the boys’ and girls’ club, the YMCA, the Della Hardman essay contest, and so many others.

This year, some of the high school students that our MV Rotary Club funded to attend a Rotary Youth Leadership Award Conference on the Cape this spring have volunteered to help out at our breakfast! The students had such an inspiring experience on their weekend.

Edgartown residents and employees who are Rotarians would love to see their neighbors and clients at the breakfast: Leo Convery, John Chirgwin, Fielding Moore, John Washbrook, Paul Watts, Liz Villard, Stephanie Burke, and many others will be cooking and serving up a storm.

The Flatbread Pizza benefit night on Tuesday, August 10, will benefit BravEncore, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School drama department. The high school troupe which will be heading to Scotland later this month will be on hand to perform music from the original play The Secret of the Seven Sisters at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. Bring your family and enjoy your pizza while being entertained, or take your pizza home. Either way, the drama department will receive a percentage of the sales for all pizza purchased!

Friends of the Edgartown library are meeting at the library on Monday August 9 at 9:30 a.m. It will be a breakfast meeting with coffee and breakfast goodies, so come and bring friends — everyone is welcome.

If you missed it the first time around, Herb Ward is presenting an encore of his talk about his great-grandfather, Captain Levi Johnson, on Friday, Aug. 13, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Parish House of the Federated Church. Mr. Ward will again tell the story of the fishermen who risked their lives to save 14 souls, and who went on to receive Carnegie Medals for their bravery and heroism. For more information, call Herb Ward at 508-693-7683. To reserve a spot, please call Mary-Jean Miner, church secretary, at 508-627-4421.

The Krauss family is missing their black and white long-haired cat. He looks like he is wearing a tuxedo and was last seen in Bold Meadow. If you have seen “Little Kitty,” please call Barbara Prada or the animal shelter. Come home Little Kitty; your family misses you.

Jean Perry Andrews called Pat Tyra to alert her to a great local Katherine Hepburn rebroadcast on Channel 13, Tuesday, August 10 at 7 p.m. with lots of old images from the 50s and 60s. She recognized a scene in front of the courthouse with Pat’s mother and Sophie Campos. Also, there are scenes from all over the Island.

More visitors for Pat Tyra and her husband, Harold Bauld, this week. His daughter, Robin Bauld, and husband, Gary Conserva, from Medford, and granddaughter, Caitlin, now working in Los Angeles, were at the house for a few days to celebrate his birthday. As usual, they were treated to lobster rolls from Grace Church in Vineyard Haven.

A special treat for Jimmy Santos, wife Patty, and classmate Pat Tyra was “discovering” Sissy Boyd selling her homemade soy candles at the Edgartown PTO’s Friday Farmers’ Market. They all reminisced about the 1950s. Sissy would open the Boys’ Club on weekdays after school for all the programs until her husband, Curtis, could get there from his regular job. She could do this because Pat babysat each weekday for their two kids. Pat remembers trying to get homework done while they were still napping. Jimmy remembered the basketball team and the Drum and Bugle band which marched on Memorial Day. Sissy reminded them that her parents, the Tellers, had the last new Planting Field Way neighborhood home which still looks much the same, near Shurtleff Way.

The beach gang was out in full force this past Sunday. It had been a long time since we were all together as everyone has had a lot on their plates this summer.

Drew and Paula Smith were here again for the weekend and they brought Drew’s sisters, Liz Smith and Mary Lee, with them and Mary’s daughters, Aidan and Janna Lee.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
