Remember last summer we were wishing for sunshine? Well, Mother Nature has turned the wheel! And even though many are thrilled that their vacations have been sunny, our gardens need rain. So hopefully we can compromise and have sun during the day and some much needed rain at night.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Branden Hammond, who celebrated his day August 9; Austin Smith, August 10; and to Megan Hurley and Grace Manson, who celebrated their day August 12.

Special wishes go out to Renee Clermont and Becca Tattersall, who celebrated their day August 5, and to Amelia Ball, who celebrated on August 10.

Last week I neglected to say Happy Birthday to Beverly Brush, who celebrated her 80th birthday on August 6. Beverly is a resident of Windermere, but I understand she keeps everyone on their toes and keeps people laughing. For her birthday she was presented a gift: a ride in the biplane, which she has wanted to do for a long time. Happy birthday Beverly, and here is too many more.

Chappy was jumping last Saturday night as Paul Condlin was feted by the town for his 30-plus years of service. He received a plaque from the town, he was honored by the NAACP, and he was thanked by Gov. Deval Patrick in a letter, but most of all he was thanked by his department and told he was a great leader and friend. One patrolman thanked him for giving him the worst job in the department, traffic officer, then the best job in his life, patrolman for the Town of Edgartown. The Patrolmen’s Association presented Paul and his wife, Linda, with a cruise to the Bahamas, which he has certainly earned. We laughed, we cried, but most of all we celebrated a job well done.

We gathered as usual at the beach on Sunday, but this time we gasped as we saw Eddie and Resa Sherr and their daughters, Rachel and Rebecca — they are usually here the last week of beach time. But much to our happiness, Resa pulled out a three-week vacation this year. Of course Ed has to go back and forth, but we get to visit for three Sundays.

Linley Dolby was at the beach for the first time in many weeks. After a bike accident and a broken foot, the beach was not the best place for Linley’s cast. What’s more, the day after her fall, one of her little dogs fell down the stairs and broke his leg! So mother and dog child recouped together. Hopefully we will see her again on Sunday; the beach wasn’t the same without her.

Lynn Ditchfield has written in about the Adult and Community Education Program, ACE MV, of which she is the director. This fall, among the list of 35 enrichment classes and seminars, ACE-MV will offer everything from dance instruction to two professional development courses: English Composition 101, as well as a Medical Terminology course in affiliation with the Health Training Center, Health Technician Certificate Programs.

Early registration for ACE-MV’s fall classes will take place at the Let’s Move Martha’s Vineyard Kick-Off Festival in Waban-Alley Park in Oak Bluffs, 1 to 6 p.m. on August 24 (rain date August 25). For more information, contact Lynn at 508-627-8373.

I can’t believe that this next week is Illumination Night, the Agricultural Fair and, of course, the Oak Bluffs Fireworks. It seems as if summer is coming to an end, but I know there is much more still ahead of us.

Some of the summer kids are getting ready to go back to school, and some to start their first year.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
