At Union Chapel this Sunday, August 15 the guest speaker is the Rev. Susan Sparks. She is America’s only female comedian with a pulpit. Currently senior pastor of the historic Madison Avenue Baptist church in New York city (and the first woman in its 160 year history), Rev. Sparks has been featured in the New York Times, on many networks, including as a regular guest with country music star Naomi Judd on the Hallmark Channel, and in numerous comedy clubs in New York city.

The title of her talk is The Tisdale Triangle, based on Psalm 46. The sermon is about getting through the trials of life. The service starts with organ preludes by Garrett Brown at 9:40 a.m.

She is also a recent cancer survivor. According to Broadway producer Coats Guiles, “Susan Sparks in an explosive combination of Matlock, Billy Graham and Ellen DeGeneres all rolled into one.” Her new book, Laugh Your Way to Grace: Reclaiming the Spiritual Power of Humor, was released in May of this year.

Union Chapel is nondenominational and welcomes anyone of different faiths who would like to worship in this historic place. The chapel is located at the intersection of Circuit, Narragansett and Kennebec avenues in Oak Bluffs.
