Chilmark is in the midst of midsummer madness but everyone is having a grand time and is out and about chasing fun at full speed. Several thunderstorms moved thru one night this week and managed to be gone by daytime. The roads are a challenge most hours of the day and the parking or lack of it is the subject of most conversations.

Work has begun rebuilding the burned out dock and walkway. A contingent of U.S. Coast Guard officers attended this week’s selectmen’s meeting but did not report any progress yet on resolving the cause and what will be done by the government and when.

Please note that the Middle Road Association will meet at the Hillman home at 55 Middle Road on August 23 at 5 p.m.

Chuck and Marjorie Phillips are back at their Larsen Lane home after a trip to Maine to visit Chuck’s sister and her husband on Verona Island and then a visit with their daughter, Susan, and her husband, Ed, in Union, Me.

Bill and Zee Gamson have had a wonderful August entertaining their daughter, Jenny Gamson of Newton with her children, Maya, Ari and Gilad. They also had a visit with their son, Josh, and his children, Reba and Maddy, in from Oakland, Ca.

Our house is full of family this week with much cooking going on for fair entries tomorrow. Our daughter Sarah, is here from Attleboro with husband, Aaron Bennett, and their sons, Jack and Scott, and our daughter in law, Chris Slater, and daughter Celia are here from Northbridge with Caleb expected any day. Did I mention the three dogs?

The acclaimed cartoonist, author and artist Jules Feiffer will give a talk at the Chilmark library on August 25 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. His new book is titled Backing into Forward: a Memoir.

Cathy Thompson, director of the Aquinnah Public Library tells us that the next speaker in the late summer speaker series will be Duncan Caldwell. He is a prehistorian and will talk about Mother Caves: The Implications of a Paleolithic Frieze. He will be speaking at the Aquinnah town hall on August 31 from 5 to 6 p.m. There are refreshments afterward.

Let’s finish this week’s chat with a few lines to our distinguished guests, President Obama and his family. We welcome you all to our town for another Chilmark summer vacation. You join others who have long found our town to be a great place to enjoy the nearness of the sea and to relax in its soothing presence. We hope that as you sightsee, you will turn left and come up-Island to Chilmark center, where you will see much of what Chilmark is proud of . . . our 1890 town hall, our 1850 school house that houses our police station, our 1850s church and our library built around an 18th century farmhouse. A short ride on North Road will take you to our working fishing port, Menemsha. While you are enjoying our ocean views and our fishing and boating waters, we hope you will join us in trying to envision the wind turbines proposed for our up-Island waters. We are a concerned and aware population trying to make the right decisions for our future. We are proud to share Chilmark with you, and we are happy to wish you a restful vacation.
