Warm days and cool nights — we seem to be having the best of both worlds. Now if this weather keeps up for the rest of the week, everyone will be happy and the fireworks will go off tonight as scheduled.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Joseph Davies, who celebrated his day August 16; to Brandon Steigelman for August 18; and to Taylor Fauteux and Nicholas Vukota, who celebrate their day today, August 20.

Special birthday wishes go out to Richard Krauss, who celebrated his day August 17, and to Bill Erickson, who celebrated August 18.

Ralph and I celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary on Monday with dinner at the Grille on Main. It was one of the best meals we have had. The surroundings were perfect, the company was great, and Tony and his crew put together a dessert plate for us which was out of this world. I have to say that the chocolate bread pudding was my favorite. So, thank you, Tony for making our special day a happy one. And Ralph, here is to many more years together.

This Sunday, August 22, the Edgartown Fire Department will have its second annual open house. They will have a pancake breakfast. There will be safety demonstrations and lots of presents for the young people. It starts at 8 and ends at noon. So make a morning of it, have some breakfast, check out the trucks, go through the museum and see its new addition, listen to the music, but most of all learn how to keep you and your loved ones safe.

New paintings by Teresa Yuan will be at the Old Sculpin Gallery August 21 to Sept. 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. If you are interested and want more information, you can call 508-627-4881.

Pam and Jim Butterick will once again open their home at 359 Barnes Road, Oak Bluffs, to host An Evening of Music on the Lagoon on Sunday, September 5 at 6 p.m. Please come and enjoy the trio consisting of John Gorman, Jan Hyer and Matt Pelikan as they set the sunset scene for the final Sunday of the summer, while enjoying wine and appetizers.

No admission is required, but a generous donation of any amount is encouraged that will directly benefit the ongoing restoration of the historic 1895 Hook and Hastings pipe organ of the Federated Church of Edgartown. If you have any questions, please call 505-939-0335 or e-mail antispung@aol.com.

As much as we have been denying it, fall is coming. Word has it that Donaroma’s will be getting in mums, ornamental peppers, and cabbages this week. But I have to say that it is one of my favorite times at work. The mums are so colorful; when they are all in full bloom, the nursery looks like Oz to me.

There are lots of activities this weekend. There are the fireworks tonight and of course there is the Agricultural Fair. Whatever you choose, have fun and be safe.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
