Gone are the grownup gatekeepers of movie merit — kids are the audience for the weekly Cinema Circus films. So the Gazette and the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival bring you the big view from the smaller viewers with weekly kid critics. Today almost-fifth-grader Kiric Hallahan reviews Along for the Ride, a program of animated short films from around the world for ages three to 10 (59 mins.) which screens (along with stilt walkers, unicyclists, trapeze artists and dancing acrobats to entertain you while you enjoy face painting, fortune telling, hula hooping, art activities, lots of bubbles, music, pizza and popcorn) on Wednesday, August 25, at 5 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center. It’s a prelude to dinner and a movie for the grownups — more on that below.

Kiric’s Reviews:

The Most Wonderful Egg was so funny and cute. I loved the way no one was left out and everyone could be a princess!

I didn’t like Attraction at all because it was so short, and I thought it had no point to it.

The Mouse with a Mouth was not in English so it was hard to read the subtitles. If someone couldn’t read fast they wouldn’t know the story.

I loved Flights because I thought it was going to be boring and I felt really bad for the old man at first. The old man looked so tired and had to climb that long flight of stairs. I found Flights hilarious and interesting because it had a surprise ending.

I loved the graphics in Jeu. I found the clip interesting but weird. The story line got me interested quickly but didn’t always make sense to me, especially the ways things changed in the movie.

Sleeping Betty had such good drawings and characters. This was the best film of all. It was so funny that I laughed my head off.

Futurissimo was very good. I loved the way the characters all became a band. The characters were very cool and funny, especially the cat who would throw anything he could at the people playing music in the alley.

I didn’t get Popped too well. I thought it was odd because the story line was very confusing.

Git Gob seemed silly and foolish to me. It didn’t seem to have a story to it.

I didn’t like Runaway one bit because it I couldn’t quite figure out the story. Maybe it was what happens when you don’t do your job. Maybe it was that even if you have a lot of money it still can’t save you. I just didn’t know.

The main feature for tomorrow night, Waste Land, screens at 8 p.m. The documentary follows world-renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of catadores — or self-designated trash-pickers. His collaboration with these inspiring characters, as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage, reveals both dignity and despair. The catadores offer irrefutable evidence of the transformative power of art and the strength of the human spirit.

The film will be preceded by a trailer for the new film A Life’s Work about Vineyard artist Barney Zeitz.

Dinner is available from 7 p.m.
