Our neighborhood is hopping, not to mention our President headed down to play a round of golf at Mink Meadows on Wednesday. I must say I have missed any kind of traffic tie-up so far that others are experiencing because of the Presidential vacation. Just regular August traffic is annoying enough.

Trude Hart returned from her Florida home. She and husband, Jim, have their son, Ronnie, and his wife, Diane, as guests this week.

There’s plenty of action at the Stokes’s house. A few weeks ago, Bill and Jan’s daughter Carrie and her husband, Ed Lau, were up to enjoy their annual Vineyard time. The Stokes have been in residence on Lennie’s Loop since 1976. There was a bit of an overlap when Carrie’s sister, Kim, arrived with her husband, Charles Beal, and their three children, Christian, Lillian and Quinn. Added to the excitement of Illumination Night and the fireworks was the fact that Christian turned 18 while here and Quinn had his 10th birthday, too. The Beals reside in West Hartford. They have been making the most of their visit, shopping, hiking, dining out and their two favorite activities — for Charles it’s bike riding, for Kim it is clamming. She has done so well with the clamming I saw her cookbook open today to the chowder recipe. Kim and Charles highly recommend the new restaurant, the Chilmark Tavern, especially for romantic dinners. For family fare, they all enjoy Offshore Ale and Giordano’s. Daughter Lillian is like a fish in water and particularly prefers State Beach. One of their hikes was to Great Rock Bight. Sounds like they will all need a vacation after vacation.

Featherstone is offering a very interesting exhibit. Island ceramicists open their show on Sunday, August 29. From 4 to 6 p.m. you may choose a bowl for $25. It will then be filled with soup, garnished with Rickard’s bread, beverages and dessert, for you to dine al fresco and take your bowl home. The exhibit continues for the next two weeks. I’ll see you there.

The last meeting of the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club was held August 17 at the Old Mill in West Tisbury, and Bebee Green was elected vice president for Vineyard Haven. The club is fun, interesting and just full of your favorite people. Find out how to join by e-mailing tisginger@aol.com.

The Mansion House continues with free Sunday classes at 5:30 p.m. open to members and nonmembers alike. On August 29 the offering is Metabolic Circuit, presented by Brenda Correa. Learn how to improve your metabolism and burn that fat.

Anniversary bouquets go out to Bob and Patsy Wheeler and Jim and Anne Haney today. Clare Ann Harrington and Ed Mossy celebrate on August 30. Ralph and Mareda Gaither-Graves observe theirs on Sept. 1.

Belated birthday balloons go out to Christian Beal for August 21 and to Quinn Beal for August 24.

The birthday bandwagon pulls along dad Joe and daughter Cheyenne Cormier today. Tomorrow is a party for Jan Stokes, Peter Weisman, Mat Rice, Chris Alley, George Platt and Debbie Healy. August 29 is claimed by Marck Baline. August 30 is shared by Laura Honey and Monique Cormier. August 31 smiles on Jessica Dolliver, Tanita Macy, Jim Pringle, Van Morrison and Millie Briggs. Sept. 1 belongs to Crystal Ewart. And on Sept. 2 Joanne Beattie and Brandon and Lindsay Smith take the cake. Many happy returns.
