A Lexington woman is facing criminal charges after she drove her car the wrong way down a one-way street in Edgartown, leaving a trail of damage in its wake.

At 4:12 a.m. Sunday Edgartown police received a report of a gray Toyota with extensive front-end damage that had driven the wrong way down North Water street, crossed Main street and proceeded onto South Water street.

Edgartown police officer Chris Dolby arrived at the scene and followed a trail of transmission fluid down North Water and onto Morse street where he came upon a parked black Ford Explorer at the intersection of Fuller street that had been hit from behind and had collided with the car parked in front of it.

Witnesses said that the car continued up South Water street and turned right at Pease’s Point Way. Officer Dolby followed the trail of leaking fluid to the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road where he lost sight of it. The Oak Bluffs police department later called Edgartown to report that they had found and towed a vehicle with extensive front-end damage that matched the description given by witnesses. When the operator of the vehicle, Lee Lord, 28, of Lexington, called to inquire about the missing vehicle, she was charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and operating after her license had been suspended.
