Viking Scholar to Give Lecture

Like any selfrespecting Viking, Leif Eriksson roamed far and wide. A difficult guy to pin down, the subject of his actual homestead has been in much debate among Viking specialists. Relatively recently, 1960 to be exact, L’Anse aux Meadows, translation Jellyfish Cove, a cozy nook at the northernmost tip of Newfoundland, has been touted as the place Mr. Eriksson hung his helmet.

This Thursday, Sept. 23, at 5:30 p.m., North America’s foremost Viking archaeologist, Dr. Birgitta Linderoth Wallace, will give a lecture that concludes this was indeed the case.

Dr. Wallace is the senior archaeologist emeritus for Parks Canada. She has published more than sixty articles on the West Norse and recently authored Westward Vikings: the Saga of L’Anse aux Meadows.

The lecture is hosted by the Martha’s Vineyard Museum and takes place at the Federated Church at 45 South Summer street in Edgartown. Admission is $12 or $8 for non-members. There is a reception to follow in the Museum’s Pease House Galleries.
