On your mark, get set, hunt and gather. That’s right: Foraging is king at the Wild Food Challenge taking place at Détente Restaurant this Monday, Oct. 4.

All those prepackaged, easy to bake, box-of-ingredients dishes are getting kicked to the curb.

The idea is simple enough. Contestants bring a dish with at least one wild ingredient in the mix. The meal should be mostly ready to go, with maybe just a little heat-up left to do, so the judges can dig right in. The contest is based on a four-part point system with a total of 10 points awarded to the categories of taste, presentation, ingredients and effort. So, even if you can’t arrange like Bobby Flay you can score big with that particular nutty something no one else could grow, catch, or run down (hunting in its truest form, eh).

The judges aren’t easily wowed. The contest is the brainchild of Bill Mason, who began it in New Zealand. One of last year’s top desserts in the Kiwi contest was a spiced ice cream. What’s so wild about that, you ask? It was covered in candied cicadas.

So think way outside of the supermarket and dare to dine where the wild things are. The event is free to all with some great prizes too. First prize is a cocktail cruise catered by Soigné. Other prizes include wine and Champagne and a host of other delectables.

But the real deal is the bragging rights of wildest cook of them all.

Contest begins at 6 p.m.
