Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School football plays its first home game of the season tonight at 6:30 p.m., taking on 0-3 South Shore Vocational Tech. The Vineyarders are fresh off a 41-32 win against league opponent Coyle Cassidy — putting head coach Don Herman just two wins away from 200 career victories — and are 3-0 on the season.

Coyle Cassidy got last Saturday’s game started with a touchdown in the first quarter and continued to press the Vineyard defense until the bitter end, scoring on a pass and a run in the fourth. Its own defense, however, could not stand up to the Randall Jette-powered option offense utilized by the Vineyarders. Mr. Jette and fellow senior captain Brian Montambault again proved unstoppable against Coyle Cassidy; Mr. Jette turned in five touchdowns and 27 carries, rushing for 192 yards (including a 90-yard TD run in the fourth quarter). Mr. Montambault, playing fullback in the stead of an injured Tyler Araujo, scored the first touchdown of the game on a 35-yard run.

Fellow running back Chris Costello combined with Mr. Montambault for a total of 167 rushing yards.

Following tonight’s game, the purple and white have a by week, and then return for another home stand against league competitor Somerset on Oct. 15.

Soccer

Both teams fell this week to the formidable offense of Bishop Feehan, with the boys’ team losing 5-0 last Thursday and the girls dropping a 7-0 game on Saturday. The teams will play two nonleague games this week before returning to Eastern Athletic League matchups with games against Coyle Cassidy on Tuesday and Bishop Stang next Thursday. The girls will take on their opponents at home at 3 p.m. both days.

Field Hockey

The girls split their matches, notching a 4-1 victory over Westport while falling 4-0 to Bishop Stang on Saturday. The team played an away match at Somerset Thursday (scores were unavailable at press time) and will return to home turf Saturday to take on Notre Dame-Hingham at 11:30 a.m.

Though other teams have struggled against Bishop Stang this season, the golf team had no such issues, sliding by the Spartans in an away meet last Thursday with a 259-271 win. Standout play by Mike DeBettencourt, Alex Bilzerian, Corey Perrotta, Chris Morris, Kat DeBettencourt and Cal Fione has brought the Vineyarders to an 8-2 season as of Wednesday; the team also took a win at Chatham Monday. Scores for this week’s matches against Falmouth and Somerset were unavailable at press time.

Cross-Country

The team turned in a solid performance at last weekend’s Manchester Invitational, where the Vineyarders competed in the small school division. The girls’ side turned in a 10th place team performance — out of 22 total teams — with Megan Dreyer placing 32nd of 171 runners. Shivonne Schofield ran a top-50 performance as well, finishing 47th.

The cross-country varsity boys also took the 10-place team spot, competing in a larger field of 32 teams. Mike Schroeder and Willy Nevin placed 38th and 42nd of 240 runners, respectively. Cross-country will travel this weekend to the Bay State Meet in Wrentham; scores for this week’s meet against Coyle Cassidy were unavailable.
