On Oct. 9, 2010, a glorious, sun-filled October day, John Walker (Nino) McCoubrey and Leslie Dale (Lee) Polychron were married on Keith Farm, Chilmark, just down the road from the McCoubrey house on Little Oak Lane.

With the cows making their slow progress (and one great bull, whose prancing steps reminded the bride of her bridegroom), and the sea winking a depthless blue, John and Lee spoke words of love for each other, cementing what started as “fat falling on embers, a flame that sprung up bright and hot, a flame they will continue to honor, a heat that drives them on.”

Together they stood, with their beautiful children beside them; Angus, Jack, Charlotte, Cassie and Penelope, propelled forward as a unified, loving family, with the blessing of 60 dear friends and family. They came on Friday from as far as San Diego and the Carolina’s to eat six-foot, Philadelphia-style hoagies, and then join in a celebration of love (and meatloaf) on Saturday.

Each moment of the wedding day, from vows to cocktails to dinner to wild dancing, moved seamlessly, commanded by the organized, epicurean mastery of Kitchen Porch catering. Let it be known, they rock! There was a raw bar, passed hors d’oeuvre, then meatloaf, mashed potatoes, popovers, cabbage, succotash, savory salad and cobbler. Under the tent (from Big Sky) with its wooden poles and snapping flags, Krishana’s dahlias marched in explosive yellow, red, orange and garnet down the length of the banquet tables. Emily Varisco photographed the entire weekend with great journalistic zeal.

The bride wore her great-grandmothers’ boots (Ellie McLaughlin), painted ivory and strung with ribbon. They held up through every dance and will be bronzed!

John, a graduate of University of Pennsylvania, is a builder in Philadelphia and co-owner of McCoubrey Overholser, Inc. As described by an ancient Sufi poet: beyond the right doing and the wrong doing, there is a field. I will meet you there. And love being all that is needed, we will play there together, forever.
