Artful Laughter

When discussing her art, Patricia Carlet speaks clearly about what she intends.

“My art is created to evoke smiles and encourage laughter. If it captures the pleasure and irony of the everyday for the viewer, then I feel that I have succeeded as an artist.”

As cabin fever sets in on the Island, and here comes February, Ms. Carlet’s art sounds like just the antidote for all those gray, wintry days.

And we’re in luck, because beginning this month and running through to Mar. 5, the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library will be presenting an exhibit of Ms. Carlet’s work. But be forewarned, although a smile and perhaps a laugh too await, there will also be many a picture inspired by her time in the Caribbean. Her piece entitled Thirteen Sunsets will be especially difficult for those with no tickets to paradise at the ready.

The exhibit is part of a new initiative of the Friends of the Library entitled Art in the Stacks. It aims to provide artists an opportunity to show their work, and for library patrons to enjoy art at the library throughout the year. The Friends host an annual group art show in June.
