Valentines Day is fast approaching. Hearts aflutter, chocolates galore, perhaps a nice dinner for your sweet.

Why not add music? After all, a day devoted to love should be a sensory smorgasbord.

On Sunday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. the West Tisbury Congregational Church serves up the perfect appetizer by hosting a recital entitled From the Heart. The concert will feature renowned pianist Lisa Weiss, a Massachusetts native and frequent visitor to Martha’s Vineyard.

Ms. Weiss made her performance debut at age seven, soloing with the Boston Pops. She received a B.A. from Harvard University, an M.M. from Yale School of Music and a D.M.A. from the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University. She is now a professor of music at Goucher College in Maryland.

Assisted by local musicians, Ms. Weiss will play a program anchored by a song cycle by Arthur Sullivan entitled The Window or The Loves of the Wrens. Edgartown tenor Kevin Ryan will sing the cycle’s poetic text which was written by Tennyson.

To open the recital Ms. Weiss will play a Sarabande from Partita No. 4 in D major by J.S. Bach. She will be joined by Oak Bluffs cellist Jan Hyer to perform Vivaldi’s Cello Sonata in E minor. Matt Pelikan, also of Oak Bluffs, will join the ensemble on alto recorder for a sonata by Francesco Barsanti.

The suggested donation is $15.00, with proceeds to benefit the preservation of the church.

A reception with the performers will follow the concert in the parish hall. Refreshments will be served.
