Please Adopt Us

In a few short weeks the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard will celebrate its second year of operation. When the MSPCA decided to go out of business here on the Island, animal lovers everywhere were devastated by the news. Out of that love and concern for homeless animals here on the Island, the Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard was established under the guidance of the Dukes County Commissioners. In those two short years over 200 animals have been adopted into loving homes; we think that is quite an accomplishment. It is all due to the generosity of the people on the Island and even off-Islanders that we have been able to spay and neuter and immunize every animal that leaves the shelter. The cost is ongoing and veterinary bills are expensive — even considering the fact that the Vineyard Veterinary Clinic has been so generous in giving us discounts, and we thank them sincerely. We hope everyone will continue to support the shelter with donations that are so gratefully received.

Every person who must surrender an animal to the shelter — for whatever reason — is assured that the animal will receive the best care possible, both medical and with love and affection from all our staff and loyal volunteers.

And while our shelter cages are emptying quickly, we still have many beautiful cats, one dog and a bunny who need homes.

The dog is Sasha, a sweet, loving eight-month-old Staffordshire terrier who has become quite the pet at the shelter. She loves everyone who comes in and even gets along with other dogs and the cats as well. She is brown and white and will make a loving pet for anyone who has time to spend with her — she is learning her manners and greets everyone who comes into the shelter with a wagging tail and a kiss.

Our cat roster includes two handsome, sleek, all-black female cats named Hope and Aggie who will be spayed soon and then ready to leave with new owners. They are sisters and it would be nice if they could go together but is not a requirement. Then we have Binx and Woody, two more black cats who have been at the shelter for a long time, as has Oprah, the sweet tortoiseshell lap cat. Alexander is a big, beautiful, long-haired orange cat who is gentle and sweet; Maxine is our lone tabby; Max is a declawed gray and white who needs to be an indoor cat only.

And finally there is Jack, our sweet, soft, cuddly bunny who would be such a great pet for a child. He loves to be held.

The shelter hours are Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The telephone number is 508-627-8662.
