Five doubles teams representing the Vineyard Tennis Center traveled to Falmouth Sports Center to compete in a ladies doubles team competition on Saturday, Jan. 29.

The competition was fierce.

Perhaps exhausted by the choppy ferry ride, the Island team of Doreen Rezendes and Merle Lincoln fell short in a second set tiebreaker 3-6, 6-7.

Having found their footing, the next Island team of Jeanie Holenko and Sarah Just cruised to an easy win to tie the match. Jeanie Holenko’s hard, deep serves set Sarah up at the net for easy putaways. Falmouth didn’t have a chance. Just and Holenko won 6-3, 6-1.

Islanders Cathy Lattanzi and Diane Morgan dug deep, winning their match in a third set tie breaker 6-4, 3-6, 10-8.

Vineyard ahead two matches to one.

But Falmouth roared back and tied the match at two apiece by beating Susan Johnson and Lisa Reagan in yet another third set tie breaker, 6-4, 5-7, 10-8.

With pride on the line, Islanders Maggie St. Denis and Susan Stevenson refused to yield. Pushed back on their heels Falmouth frequently went to the lob. St. Denis and Stevenson didn’t back down. Utilizing crisp volleys and steady overheads, they broke Falmouth’s serve once in each set. The final score for St. Denis and Stevension was 6-4, 6-4.

Vineyard over Falmouth, three matches to two.
