Congratulations to James Taylor upon receiving a National Medal of Arts award presented by President Barack Obama at the White House this past week. James was accompanied by his beloved mother, Trudy Taylor, who must have been beaming with pride. James was certainly well-deserving of his award for his wonderful work and performances around the world over the past half a century.

Congratulations as well to Robert Brustein of Lambert’s Cove upon his receiving a National Medal of Arts award. And to Meryl Streep, whom I met four years ago in Manhattan. I have enjoyed four of her incredible movies once again over the long winter. President Obama certainly chose some of my favorites to receive this prestigious award.

Welcome to Jane Seagrave, soon to be the new publisher of the Vineyard Gazette. I will look forward to her arrival in a month.

Congratulations to the Vineyard Gazette staff upon their 17 awards from NENPA. It is nice to be a part of the Vineyard Gazette even though those with NENPA rarely read what the columnists write each week.

Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living will present the third cultural luncheon with a presentation by Kerry Alley with his history of the influence and contributions of the Portuguese community on Martha’s Vineyard. The luncheon will be held on Saturday, March 12 at The Grill on Main with a culturally prepared luncheon by chef Anthony Saccoccia and his staff. Tickets are $25 and may be obtained by calling director Leslie Clapp at 508-939-9440.

The Aquinnah community will celebrate the wearing of the green, or perhaps just the first signs of spring, on Sunday, March 13 from 9 a.m. to noon with a potluck brunch at the Aquinnah town hall. Please bring your favorite breakfast dish to share as everyone gathers to welcome the longer days and sunshine after a cold, blustery, grey, slushy and dreary winter. Share your tales of adventures of winter travel or your plans for a summer garden with your friends and neighbors. If you are not in the mood to prepare a dish for the brunch, plastic utensils and hot or cold cups are always a much needed donation until the new kitchen becomes well-stocked with supplies. For further information, please call yours truly at the above number. Thank you; see you Sunday morning.

Tireless volunteer Dorothy Bangs will be selling daffodils for the American Cancer Society once again. All presales will be delivered to the Vineyard on Tuesday and will be delivered upon their arrival on March 15. Mrs. Bangs has noted that the presales have put her closer to her anticipated goal for this year. On Wednesday, March 16 daffodils will be sold at Cronig’s Market from 10 a.m. until they are sold out. At the same time, Jacque Renear will be selling bouquets of the daffodils at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital near the cafeteria from 10 a.m. until sold. Please support this wonderful cause that affects way too many families. Thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Bangs for her years of dedication in raising funds for the American Cancer Society.

Spring is in the air. Thank you to Aquinnah highway superintendent Jay Smalley, who placed two new benches in Aquinnah Circle on Wednesday. The benches will certainly be a welcoming sign for those who stop to enjoy the spectacular view while offering a place for meditative thoughts.

Elsie Fantasia, daughter of Edward and Fawn (Vanderhoop), has heard from the colleges of her choice. For now, she is setting her sights on attending Mount Ida in Newton.

Tom Fantasia will return to his sophomore year studies at the University of Maine on Sunday, after being home for the past week.

Molly Fischer and her parents, Albert and Linda, drove to Ithaca, N.Y., this past week to view Ithaca College, which is one of Molly’s choices for next year. After a long, seven-hour drive, only slowed with Bert stopping to take spectacular photographs, Molly enjoyed a tour of the campus, spent one night in the dormitory, and spent time with the lacrosse team. Now she is home to decide which college she would really like to attend.

Noah James Manning returned home on Sunday evening after spending a few days in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., with his grandparents, Bill and Joan Kistner. While in New York, Noah and his mom Theresa enjoyed a Justin Bieber movie, the “only two in the entire theatre,” spending time with his aunts and uncles and his Kistner cousins, extending his Star Wars wardrobe, and just relaxing. Of course he was accompanied on his journey by his parents, Paul and Theresa.

Congratulations to Caroline P. Mayhew, who will become a first-year associate with Hobbs, Straus, Dean and Walker, a Washington, D.C. law firm that specifically specializes in federal Indian law. Caroline will graduate in May from University of California at Los Angeles School of Law with a law degree and a master’s degree in Native American studies. She is a 2002 graduate of Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and a graduate of Simon’s Rock College in 2006 summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Native American and Latin American studies. Caroline has spent time and worked on a Lakota reservation in South Dakota. She has also worked for the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) over the course of two seasons in the education department and once was recommended for the position of director of education.

She is the daughter of Jack and Betsy Mayhew and granddaughter of John and Shirley Mayhew, all of West Tisbury. All of these accomplishments in less than a quarter of a century. All the best to Caroline.

Condolences to the family and friends of Robert Scott, who passed away this week. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 13 at the VFW, where he had once served as commander.

Congratulations to Samuel Scott, son of Francis and Linda (Garvin), upon being on the dean’s list for the fall semester at Nichols College. Sam is a sophomore at Nichols and enjoys participating on the golf team as well.

Condolences to the family and friends of Edwin Newhall Woods, who often participated in the services at Community Baptist Church of Gay Head. Mr. Woods and his family were very supportive of the efforts of Community Baptist Church over the years.

Happy Birthday wishes this week to my former summer neighbor whose music I have enjoyed for almost the past 50 years and now with a national award to place near his Grammy awards; James V. Taylor will celebrate his special day on March 12.

Andrea McGee will celebrate on March 12 as will Janice Rose and Jaron Chaplin, who recently returned to the Vineyard and is now working at the tribal building.

Ken Wentworth will party on March 13 along with Nina P. Butler and Lisa Bibko-Vanderhoop. Jade and Maya Araujo will be nine years old on March 13.

Robert W. C. Manning will party on March 14, as will Herb Slater, Todd Araujo, Jay Smalley, Richard Skidmore and Stevie Edwards. March 15 will be a day of celebration for D.J. Kaeka, Edmund Silva, Jib Ellis, Sylvie Delaunay Vandal, Tammy Conroy Hersh and Seth Boynton. Rodeo Langer will be four years old on March 16 and shares the day with Natalie Francis, Taylor Ives, Mike Stutz, Jada Lee Randolph, who will be nine years old, and Frank Gonsalves. Peter Devine will celebrate on March 17.
