Friday Night Fever

For many, the poses detailed in the Kama Sutra push the edges of mating rituals. The woodcock, on the other hand, looks at the 64 poses, all of them so mundane in their groundedness, and squawks. This bird gets busy in the air. The woodcock is not shy, either.

This evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Vineyarders who like to watch can head out to the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary in Edgartown to experience the woodcock’s aerial mating display. Well, not all Vineyarders. The folks at Felix Neck have advised that this is an adults-only event. Older children with chaperones are invited too. Parents be forewarned, though: No one is immune from the woodcock’s premating dance ritual. In other words, we are all birds of a feather when under the spell of woodcock fever.

The cost for the evening’s entertainment is $3 for members and $5 for nonmembers.
