At its regular board meeting held on Saturday, March 26, Martha’s Vineyard Hospital elected John H. Schaefer of Edgartown and New York and Walter S. Teller of Chilmark and California to its board of trustees.

John Schaefer retired from Morgan Stanley in 2006 having served as a member of Morgan Stanley’s management committee from 1998-2005 and president and chief operating officer of Morgan Stanley’s global wealth management group from 2000 to 2005. Prior to the 1997 merger of Dean Witter, Discover and Morgan Stanley, Mr. Schaefer was executive vice president of investment banking and head of corporate finance of Dean Witter.

Mr. Schaefer is now a vice chairman of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, an advisory director of New York Needs You, a leadership development program that targets high-potential, first generation college students, and he is on various boards and advisory capacities at the University of Notre Dame, from which he received his accounting degree in 1974. He also has an MBA from Harvard Business School.

The Schaefers’ began coming to the Vineyard more than 30 years ago and are supporters of many Vineyard organizations, including Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation, where Mr. Schaefer is vice president of the board.

Walter Teller is a founding partner of Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, LLP, in Beverly Hills, a firm specializing in entertainment law. He has served as a trustee for the Center for Early Education in West Hollywood, where he oversaw construction of the center’s new campus. A producer, director and cinematographer in New York and Boston, Mr. Teller has also been a member of the Sundance Institute advisory board and a guest lecturer on film.

Mr. Teller first started coming to the Vineyard in 1946 with his family. Along with his wife, Claudia Weill, a film, television and theatre director, he has two sons, Sam and Eli, and a home in Chilmark.

The Tellers are supporters of many other Island organizations including the Vineyard Conservation Society, Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation, Vineyard Playhouse, the Yard, Martha’s Vineyard Museum, Aquinnah/Gay Head Community Association, the Wendy Weisman Jenkinson Culinary Arts Fund, Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival, Polly Hill Arboretum, Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group and the Vineyard Energy Project.
