The French word for ‘trophy wife’ is potiche. And Belle de Jour herself, Catherine Deneuve, is the potiche in the French film Potiche screening on Saturday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. at Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven.

Set in 1977 in a provincial French town, this screwball comedy is adapted from a hit comic play. Catherine Deneuve is Suzanne Pujol, who steps in to manage her wealthy, tyrannical husband’s umbrella factory after the workers go on strike and take him hostage. To everyone’s surprise, Suzanne proves herself a competent and assertive woman of action, aided by Gérard Depardieu who plays a former union leader with whom she once enjoyed a passionate bout of al fresco sex. But when her husband returns from a restful cruise in top form, things get complicated.

This absurd, satirical and hilarious take on the war between the sexes and classes is in French with English subtitles. Admission is $8 and $5 for film society members. For more information visit mvfilmsociety.com or call 774-392-2972.
