The Edgartown historic district commission has ordered a cease and desist on construction of a large fence being built on a North Water street home.

The order was issued to Edgartown contractor John Nugent on Wednesday to halt activity on a new granite and wood fence and granite curbing at 93 North Water street, as well as a brick retaining wall along Cottage street which runs perpendicular to the property.

Mr. Nugent did not receive approval from the town historic commission for the construction, and was told at a June 21 meeting to stop further construction until a certificate of appropriateness was issued. A public hearing is scheduled for July 19, but the construction had apparently continued.

This was not the first town reprimand for Mr. Nugent on the building project. Three weeks ago the Edgartown selectmen chided the contractor for leaving equipment that blocked access to a public landing at the end of Cottage street. The renovation project is on a home owned by Brian O’Brien.
