The Holmes Hole Sailing Association continued its summer season of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven Harbor with two Harbor races on June 26.

Sunday was a warm, hazy morning with a light east-northeast wind of one to eight knots. Local sailors know that on a warm summer day the north wind is a dying wind and it lived up to the expectation. Eleven boats came to the line for the 10 a.m. start, which was postponed to allow the wind to fill in. The race committee called for a triangular course from nun 6 to red nun 4 at West Chop, then to green can 23a at East Chop, and back to red nun 6 in the harbor, twice around. The first two legs were a beat to windward. Given the late start and the light air, the race committee shortened the course and finished the race at East Chop.

Finishing first in the A division was Steve Besse in the J 120, Apres. In second was Phil Hale in the Shields, Wicked. Third was Charlie Felder in the J 24, Blu J. Fourth was Andy Berry in Isobar, fifth was Mike Loberg in Masquerade and sixth was Mo Flam in Penelope.

In the B division, first was Dan Culkin in the Vineyard Vixen, Magic Time. In second was David Lott in the Cape Dory, Avanti. Third was John and Lisa Stout in the Gannon and Benjamin Sloop, Isabella. Fourth was Rebecca Colson in Silhouette. Tyche dropped out in the light air.

Fourteen boats posted for the afternoon race at 2 p.m. The fleet sailed a triangular course from nun 6 to red to green can 23a at East Chop, then to red nun 4 at West Chop, and back to red nun 6 in the harbor, twice around. The course was shortened to one lap after the start because of lack of wind.

Finishing first in the A division was Roger Becker in the C& C 24, Gloria. In second was Andy Berry in the Cal 33, Isobar. Third was Mike Loberg in the Morris 36, Masquerade. Fourth was Mary Worrell in Second Wind, fifth was Phil Hale in Wicked, sixth was Steve Besse in Apres, seventh was Mo Flam in Penelope, eighth was Ed Cerullo in Undine and ninth was Charlie Felder in Blu J.

In the B division, first was Dan Culkin in the Vineyard Vixen, Magic Time. In second was Rebecca Colson in the Nonsuch, Silhouette. Third was Bow Van Riper in Tyche. Fourth was John and Lisa stout in Isabella, and fifth was Stuart Halpert in Providence.

The summer racing was scheduled to continue with a night race on Thursday, June 30 and a Sound Race on July 3 at noon. New members are actively encouraged, as are guest boats. Anyone interested should contact Diana Hartmann at 508-693 4592.
