Singing for the Beauty of the World

When Melanie DeMore comes to the Island she doesn’t just perform. She gets us all to perform. No, this isn’t one of those uncomfortable moments when you attend a performance and are plucked from the crowd to go center stage. Melanie spends the week before her performance hosting singing classes around the Island. And, if so moved after attending a workshop, you are invited to display your chops at her official performance.

Ms. DeMore’s concert is set for Saturday, July 23, at Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs. It is an evening not to be missed. Over the course of her career, she has performed with Pete Seeger, Odetta, and Sweet Honey in The Rock. The concert is also a fundraiser for Zambia, providing much needed funds for orphans, women and disabled children there.

The workshops preceding the concert take place on Tuesday, July 19, at 5 p.m. at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury and Friday, July 22, at 6 p.m. at the Charter School. Both workshops are open to all ages and cost $20.

Concert tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Tickets are available at ticketsmv.com, Alley’s General Store, Aboveground Records and Island Entertainment. For more information, visit aacdpafrica.org or call 508-693-4059.
