To launch the publication of The Complete Plays of Sophocles, translator Robert Bagg will speak at the West Tisbury library on Wednesday, July 27 from 5 to 6 p.m.

Robert Bagg has published seven books of poetry, and several translations of Greek plays. He has won the Prix de Rome, and many fellowships, including Ingram Merrill, National Endowment for the Arts. Guggenheim, NEH and the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Residency. He has degrees from Amherst College, Harvard and the University of Connecticut. He chaired the English Department for many years at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Mr. Bagg and James Scully are cotranslators of The Complete Plays of Sophocles, published by Harper.

Poet Richard Wilbur writes of Mr. Bagg’s translations, “They have a space impact which gets the moment-by-moment emotion of the plays and makes plain the moral or political themes at issue.” Mr. Bagg’s translations of Euripides and Sophocles have been performed 60 times around the world.

Mr. Bagg will speak about the issues involved in translating, followed by a book signing.
