Today is Native American Day in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as proclaimed in the past by previous governors. This weekend will be the annual tax free weekend, and of course when everyone arrived in 1620 — there were no taxes.

Setti Warren, mayor of Newton, a candidate in the Democratic primary for the Senate seat presently held by Scott Brown will speak at the Howes House on Saturday, August 13 at 9:30 a.m. This special meeting of the Martha’s Vineyard Democratic Council will start at 9 a.m. and end at approximately 10:30 a.m. The public is cordially invited for spicy conversation, good information and no fund-raising! Happenings this week at the Aquinnah Cultural Center will be Jannette Vanderhoop creating horseshoe crab baskets on Wednesday. On Wednesday,

August 17 Jonathan Perry will work on a soapstone pipe. Classes are free with each paid admission. Saturday, August 13 will be the annual Feast and Fundraiser at 5 p.m. For further information and tickets, please call 508-645-7900.

The Reverend Dr. Raphael Warnock, Senior Pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga., will be the guest preacher at the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury on Sunday, August 14 at the 10 a.m. service. Child care is available and parking is available behind the Grange Hall and behind the Howes House. This marks the third visit by Rev. Warnock. All Island residents and visitors are invited to this memorable service.

The Aquinnah/Gay Head Community Association will host a wine and cheese reception on Monday, August 15 at 5 p.m. at the Vanderhoop Homestead on Aquinnah Circle. Rain date will be August 16. There is ample parking available. The theme for the evening will be wind power and windmill development. Pros and cons will be discussed. The principal speaker and moderator will be Mark London, executive director of the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. This should be a fascinating and very informative evening. In the meantime, the front cover of a recent issue of The New Yorker probably sums it all up for us all!!

Peter Benson Miller will be the guest speaker on August 16 at the Aquinnah Public Library with the Photography of Milton Gendel. The presentation will be at the Aquinnah Town Hall from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

All Vineyard roads lead to the Fair as it begins on Thursday, August 18. Congratulations to the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society in their 150th year of celebrating the agricultural life on the Vineyard. Fair manager Eleanor Fischer Neubert will be very pleased with the fair this year and especially with the parade slated for Tuesday.

Randy Eckert and Clare will return to their home in Manhattan this week after spending another glorious summer in Aquinnah.

Condolences to the family and friends of Billie Marie Kee, who passed away recently in Hyde Park, Mass. She was the daughter of Lise Vanderhoop Kee and William Kee Jr. Billie Marie often enjoyed summer vacations in Aquinnah at the home of her aunt, Pam Vanderhoop. She was the mother of Serena Kee and Derek Graham Jr. She is also survived by her grandmothers, Jewell Vanderhoop and Lucy Kee. She was the granddaughter of the late Arnold Vanderhoop and William Kee Sr. She was a member of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) and a descendant of the Manning and Vanderhoop families. Services were held on August 2 and conducted by Reverend Carl Green.

Family and friends of Ann Lynch will gather on Tuesday, August 16 for her memorial service in Aquinnah.

Happy 13th anniversary wishes to Todd and Jaeleen Araujo as they celebrate their special day on August 15.

Vernon E. Jordan Jr. will celebrate his special day on August 15 and hopefully has arrived already for his August vacation. Kate Taylor will celebrate on August 15, heading out soon for a brief musical tour.

Kendra Frakes will observe her special day on August 16 as will officer Jim Neville. Carl Crocker parties on August 17 and shares the day with Samantha Maltais.
