KCT Concerts Has the Medicine

This weekend KCT Concerts gets going again with a show featuring Richie Stearns and special guests Willie Watson from Old Crow Medicine Show and Rosie Newton of the The Pearly Drops and the Evil City String Band. Now there’s a cool name for a band.

Before we get to describing Mr. Stearns and the other musicians, it is important to state that descriptions of their talent are merely window dressing. Everything KCT Concerts, a nonprofit organization devoted to traditional music, produces is of the highest quality. Whether it be Irish music, local musicians, or, in this case, a swing toward an old timey flavor, the word on Island streets and beaches is go, go, go to the show.

And now to the particular.

Richie Stearns picks a banjo beat to back up his heartfelt songs. Besides his solo work he has contributed to recordings by Natalie Merchant, the Horse Flies, Donna the Buffalo, Bubba George, John Doyle, and Carrie Rodriguez, to name but a few. In the words of Tony Trishka, Mr. Stearns’ music is “a transcendentally clawhammering force of nature ... ladled from deep wells of spirit.”

The concert begins at 8 p.m. at the Katharine Cornell Theatre located at 54 Spring street in Vineyard Haven.

Tickets are $20 in advance, available at ticketsmv.com, or $25 at the door.
