The Vineyard fields will be lit up tonight as the football team takes on Coyle-Cassidy and again tomorrow when boys’ soccer looks for revenge against the Nauset squad that handed them their first loss. Girls’ soccer will also be home this weekend, playing Scituate at noon on Saturday.

St. Mary’s jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, notching 24 points while holding the Vineyarders scoreless. Senior running back Tyler Araujo ran in the first touchdown in the second quarter, following it up with a two-point conversion to get the team on the board. Junior Alec Tattersal caught a Delmont Araujo pass in the fourth, with senior Ryan Fisher taking control of the conversion to make the score 32-16.

Junior Stuart Hersh ran the third and final Vineyard touchdown in later in the quarter, but it was not enough to make up the initial point deficit.

The team is 0-2 going into their first league game against Coyle-Cassidy. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. tonight.

Boys’ Soccer

The boys move to a 3-2 season record and perfect 2-0 EAC record after wins last Saturday and Tuesday against Bishop Stang and Coyle-Cassidy, respectively.

The Vineyarders came back from a two-goal deficit to tie the Spartans on Saturday, only to fall back by two again early in the second half. Senior John Oliveira successfully converted a penalty kick to put the team within one goal.

Junior Lynicker Souza, having already scored one of the first Vineyard goals of the game, completed his triumphant return to the varsity squad by netting a hat trick with both the game-tying goal and the game winner. The Vineyarders took the win 5-4.

Junior Jack Roberts extended his goal-scoring streak to four games against Coyle-Cassidy on Tuesday, finding the back of the net in the team’s 4-1 victory despite having to step out of the game early.

Seniors John Marcal and John Olivera scored against C-C, with Olivera contributing two assists as well. Junior Ben Dwane notched his first varsity goal on an unassisted 35-yard boot.

Coach Damon Burke also praised the midfield play of junior Martín Aranzabe and senior Rodrigo Honorato.

The team takes on Nauset Saturday evening at home, hoping to turn the tables on the Warriors after a 4-2 loss earlier this month. The game begins at 6:30 p.m.

The Vineyarders will play EAC opponent Bishop Feehan at home Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Girls’ Soccer

The Vineyard girls pulled off two rallies in Tuesday’s game against EAC opponent Coyle-Cassidy, tying the Warriors 2-2.

After falling behind a goal, junior Alayna Hutchinson scored on an assist from senior Maddie Hughes. The Vineyarders again dropped behind, but evened the match on an unassisted goal by senior Aubrea McCormick. The goals were the first for the Vineyarders this season.

Last Thursday the team fell 2-0 to Bishop Stang in their first league game. Coach Richard Bennett was nonetheless pleased with the Vineyarders’ performance against a strong conference team.

Saturday saw more tough competition in the form of Wellesley High School. Despite strong play from the defense and outstanding goalkeeping from freshman keeper Mariah Duarte, the girls could not close the deal, and took a 2-0 loss.

The Vineyarders play Scituate tomorrow at home at noon. They will travel to Bishop Feehan on Tuesday for the teams’ first meeting of the season.

Field Hockey

The girls took a 5-2 loss Saturday against visiting Needham, but tied 1-1 with EAC opponent Somerset on Thursday. Scores from Thursday’s game against West Bridgewater were unavailable at press time.

The team travels to Barnstable this weekend, and will play Westport and Bishop Stang in away matches on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.
