The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society is opening its off-season this month with two documentaries and a feature comedy. All films are shown at the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven and begin at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, the documentary Con Artist explores the life of artist Mark Kosabi who gained international fame and fortune via a Warhol-inspired gimmick: To mass-produce and sell thousands of paintings per year, conceived of and executed not by himself, but by a revolving stable of hired hands. He then signed and sold these paintings, proclaiming that “modern art is a con and I am the world’s greatest con artist.”

Needless to say his second act was to fail miserably, be hated by all and live in exile. The documentary follows this rise and fall and Mr. Kosabi’s attempts to rise again in various guises from lecturer at Yale University, to self financing a TV game show, to gaining a high profile commission for the Vatican.

On Oct. 8, the film society presents another documentary, this time by director Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line, The Fog of War, and Mr. Death to name just a few of his masterful portraits), called Tabloid. This film follows the salacious adventures of 1949 Wyoming beauty queen Joyce McKinney.

And on Oct. 15 Losing Control, a comedy about a female scientist who wants proof that her boyfriend is “the one,” hits the big screen.

Three cheers for the film society’s continued efforts to bring a diverse slate of films that would never grace the mainstream theaters, not by measure of quality but box office clout, to our shores.
