Tennis is one of the few perfect sports that can be played the entirety of one’s life. Not many 80-year-olds out on the gridiron are there?

And yet there is still a lot of stopping and starting as one chases down a lob or crosscourt ripper which can lead to some cranky knees. Plus there’s that serving motion. Let’s just say it’s not a love match for your shoulders.

The Vineyard Tennis Workout and Spa knows this better than anyone. Owner Connie McHugh not only runs the place, she coaches the high school girls’ team. She is also a certified professional teacher of the game.

Which is why this Saturday, Oct. 22, they are celebrating their 15th anniversary with a clinic by Dr. Stephen Esser, a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Dr. Esser used to run a similar tennis center in Florida before heading off to medical school. He is currently doing a rotation at Harvard.

The morning begins with a doubles clinic from 9 to 10:15 a.m. led by Dr. Esser. Actually, the day begins at 8:30 a.m. for anyone interested in warming up before the clinic. Afterwards, Dr. Esser will give a lecture on how to keep the tennis body injury free.

Ms. McHugh describes him as the best speaker she has ever heard.

And in celebration of their anniversary the entire event is free and open to everyone. Come to part or all of the activities.
