Friday night lights return to the football field tonight for the Vineyarders’ league game against Bishop Feehan. The game begins at 5 p.m.

The Vineyarders took on Case last Saturday, defeating the Cardinals 20-6.

Although Case got on the board in the first quarter with a touchdown, the Vineyard answered with two touchdowns of their own in the second, both coming off runs by senior quarterback Delmont Araujo. Araujo rushed 79 yards after a punt recovery to score the first touchdown, and turned in 34 yards for the second.

The final Vineyard score came in the third on a run by Joe Turney. Araujo provided the extra two points.

Senior Tyler Araujo turned in a noteworthy performance as well, rushing for 114 yards (17 carries) while playing offense and recording a sack and five tackles during his time on the defensive end of things.

Boys’ Soccer

The boys’ winning streak continued this week with victories against Dennis-Yarmouth on Friday and EAC opponent Somerset on Tuesday. The team has two games remaining in the regular season, including a final EAC game against Bishop Feehan.

On Friday, the team took down the Dolphins 4-0, with goals coming from junior Jack Roberts (assist by junior Kyp Cooperrider), senior Rodrigo Honorato, senior John Marcal (assisted by Honorato), and junior Jacob Lawrence (assisted by junior Vincent Carlomagno).

Roberts, Marcal and Lawrence also scored for the Vineyarders against Somerset in the team’s 3-1 victory. Assists came from freshman Gabe DeOliveira, senior John Oliveira, and Honorato.

The team is 6-0-1 in the EAC and has “mathematically” won the league, said Coach Damon Burke, although the designation will not be official until the Feehan game.

Golf

After finishing the regular season with an 11-7 record, the Vineyarders qualified for the state tournament and traveled to sectionals this week. The team placed sixth of 10 teams with a score of 334, but did not move on to regionals (only the top three teams advance).

Junior Mike DeBettencourt and senior Chris Morris shot matching scores of 82 in the tournament, while sophomore Matt Marchand turned in an 84. Senior Cal Fiore rounded out the Vineyard tournament team, and shot an 86.

With only seniors Fiore and Morris graduating, the core of the team is in place for the 2012 season.

“We should be even stronger next year,” said Coach Doug DeBettencourt.

Girls’ Soccer

The girls picked up their first win of the season Friday with a 3-0 victory against Cape Cod Regional Tech. Senior Madison Hughes scored her first two varsity goals, one on an assist from senior Aubrea McCorming and the second on an assist by senior Jessie Chandler. Junior Alayna Hutchinson notched the third Vineyard goal on a rebound.

Following the Cape Cod Tech game, the Vineyarders embarked on a five-day spree playing what Coach Richard Bennett described as “the four hardest teams on our schedule.” Saturday saw a trip up to Wellesley; although the team lost 3-0, they were treated to a buffet lunch afterwards.

The girls also took on top-10 team Bishop Feehan, Scituate and visiting Somerset, but fell to each of these opponents. Freshman Emily DeBettencourt found the net against Somerset on an assist by Jessie Chandler and freshman Lucy Hackney.

The team looks for another win against Cape Cod Tech today at home. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.

Field Hockey

Senior captain Maggie Johnson scored the lone goal in Saturday’s home game against Nauset, but it was enough to give the Vineyarders the win.

The team takes on Nantucket in an away game for their final match of the season.
