An Aquinnah man was arraigned Friday in Dukes County superior court on charges of second-degree murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon stemming from a fatal stabbing in Vineyard Haven last summer.

Ovando S. Eghill surrendered to authorities after a warrant for his arrest was issued in wake of Thursday’s grand jury indictments, which move the case up from district court to superior court.

During the arraignment, he entered not guilty pleas before the Hon. Cornelius Moriarty 2nd and was released under the same $10,000 bail and conditions set in district court.

They included wearing a GPS monitoring device, abiding by curfews, relinquishing his passport and green card and staying away from Spring street, the site of the June stabbing. Cape and Islands Assistant district attorney Laura Marshard argued that Mr. Eghill’s bail be increased to $150,000.

He is accused of stabbing Michael Trusty of Edgartown with a work knife during what authorities called a domestic dispute. Mr. Eghill claimed he acted in self defense because Mr. Trusty threatened him with a machete.
