Author Chip Bishop’s great-great-uncle, Joseph Bucklin Bishop, was a newspaper editor during the time of Theodore Roosevelt. One of the stories he covered was the construction of the Panama Canal, the transoceanic canal that today seems a foregone conclusion but at the time was considered by many to be a fool’s errand.

George Washington Goethals, a member of the Vineyard Goethals and who oversaw the construction of the canal, is remembered as the “Genius of the Panama Canal.” As Joseph Bishop detailed the journey of the making of the canal from the backroom politics and corruption in New York city to the jungles of Panama and back again to the White House, the two became friends.

Chip Bishop recently wrote a book about these three men and the roles they played in making history. The book is called The Lion and the Journalist: The Unlikely Friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and Joseph Bucklin Bishop. On Thursday, Nov. 10, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum is hosting an author talk with Mr. Bishop, who will discuss his new book. The event begins at 5:30 p.m.

Admission is $8 for members and $12 for nonmembers. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
