Student enrollment in Vineyard public schools remains relatively flat with last year, the annual school census shows.

The school census is done in the five elementary schools and regional high school each year on Oct. 1.

Total enrollment is 2,027, eight more than last year, although numbers are up and down at various schools.

The high school saw the biggest drop in enrollment this year, falling from 712 students to 669. Vineyard schools superintendent Dr. James H. Weiss said the change could be tracked to the freshman class. There were 209 incoming freshmen last year and 171 this year.

“We typically have new kids come in freshmen year, but that didn’t happen to the same degree this year,” Mr. Weiss said. “Otherwise it was pretty much what we anticipated.”

Chilmark, Edgartown and Tisbury all have more students. Chilmark enrollment saw the biggest percentage jump, increasing from 40 to 53 students this year and prompting the school to add a second kindergarten/first grade class.

Edgartown has 23 more students with a total enrollment of 335. At the Tisbury School 29 more students are enrolled, bringing the total to 320. At the Oak Bluffs School there are 13 fewer students enrolled; the total is 385 this year. West Tisbury enrollment dropped by just one student for a total enrollment of 265.
