Islanders will have a number of opportunities to pay their respects to servicemen and women on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11.

Oak Bluffs will mark the day with an annual parade, which the U.S. Department of Veterans Affiairs recently recognized as a special designation of regional importance. The parade will begin at 10:45 a.m. at Our Market. From there, it will continue to the monument at Ocean Park and finish at the VFW, located at 14 Towanticut avenue. West Tisbury selectmen will observe Veterans Day with a rededication ceremony for the town’s World War II monument. The monument was until recently located at the grassy intersection of Edgartown-West Tisbury and State Roads. The monument has been moved near the flagpole at town hall. The rededication ceremony will take place at 12:30 p.m. Three Island veterans, John Mayhew, Clifton Athearn and Nelson Bryant, are expected to take part in the event. John Alley will also speak. A police color guard will round out the afternoon.

Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center in Vineyard Haven will hold a Shabbat service for veterans at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome and invited to attend. For more information about this service, call 508-627-7456.

Across town, volunteers will plant more than 400 flags at the Avenue of Flags in Oak Grove Ceremony. The flags will remain in place from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers’ assistance is requested.
