Island Schools Chicken

Island schools received a special chicken delivery recently, thanks to the Farm Institute and local food liaison the Produce Connection. Julie Sierputoski, who runs the Produce Connection, typically spends her days ferrying farm produce to Vineyard schools, as the name of her organization would imply. Last week, however, she added poultry to her haul. Ms. Sierputoski delivered 47.5 pounds of Farm Institute chicken to the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School. The week before that, she delivered 55.75 pounds of Farm Institute chicken to chefs Leslie Floyd and Jenny Devivo at the regional high school and West Tisbury school.

The regional and West Tisbury schools’ local lunches were made possible with funding from Island Grown Initiative.

The Farm Institute is currently selling Island chicken, Christmas hams and sausage. For every 10 chickens the Farm Institute sells through Christmas, it will donate one chicken to the Island Food Pantry. To order one, call 508-627-7007.
