Award Winning Photos on Display

March is roaring in like a lion with a taste for talented high school students’ artwork.

This Sunday, March 4, Featherstone Center for the Arts will unveil a collection of photographs by Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School senior Truda Silberstein. The showcase is part of Featherstone’s annual tradition of celebrating high school artists’ work, and Truda is a worthy, award-winning participant. Last month she received a top-level commendation in the 2012 Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards. She’s also the photography editor for the student newspaper, the High School View.

An opening reception for Truda’s photographs — nearly all of which celebrate the human form — will take place Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. The photographs will remain on display through Friday, March 9, in the Virginia Weston Beese Gallery, where they can be viewed from noon to 4 p.m.

Next Sunday, March 11, Featherstone will celebrate eight more students from the regional and charter high schools with the debut of Holga Heaven, a roundup of six-by-six-inch gelatin silver prints. The black-and-white photographs, all taken with inexpensive plastic cameras known as Holgas, reveal a quirky low-fi aesthetic.

Participants Coco Brown, Eleah Caseau, Ben Gordon, Isaiah Rain Maynard, Raine Monast, Sadie Parr and Tessa Whittaker are students at Featherstone’s free after-school weekly photography class taught by Sam Hiser.

Catch the opening reception on Sunday, March 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. The photographs will grace the walls of the gallery until March 16, and like Truda’s own work, can be viewed weekdays from noon to 4 p.m.
