A busy week of Vineyard sports continued Friday night, as the boys’ basketball team advanced to the semifinal round of the Division 3 South Section tournament after defeating visiting Bishop Feehan 71-52.

Bishop Feehan, a league rival in the Eastern Athletic Conference, gave the Vineyard one of their two regular-season losses earlier this winter.

Though the Vineyard offense turned in a balanced attack to take an early lead, it was the team’s defensive efforts that stood out; Bishop Feehan managed just 18 points in the first half.

Senior Peter Keaney scored 21 points to lead the Vineyard, while junior Jack Roberts notched 12 — all on three-pointers — and senior Izak Browne 10. Seniors Del Araujo and Ryan Fisher had seven points each.

The victory gives the Vineyarders their first 21-win season since 1974.

The boys learn their next opponent Saturday, pending the results of the Norwell/Westwood game. The semifinals will be played at a neutral site.

The girls’ hockey team ended its historic season and four-game win streak in a heartbreaker of a game against number-four seed Norwell. Trailing 1-0 after the first period, the Vineyarders fought to a 3-3 tie with a minute remaining in the game. Norwell scored with 54 seconds left to take the win. The team finishes with a 14-8 record.

Boys’ hockey plays their first postseason game Saturday afternoon in Brockton. The hockey booster club is sponsoring a free fan bus to the game, which departs from the noon boat out of Vineyard Haven. For more information please contact Bill Davies at w.davies5@comcast.net or 774-563-1830.
