The Martha’s Vineyard Travel Mites capped an already exciting season—including an appearance at TD Garden and a four-game tourney sweep at the Frank Bell Memorial Tournament—by bringing home the Cape and Islands league trophy, defeating Nantucket 3-2 on Saturday and Hetland 5-1 on Sunday.

The Mites had been shaky against both teams this season (three losses and one tie against each), but turned in dominant performances over the weekend, keeping pace with 18-1-1 Nantucket throughout regulation. The team played to a 2-2 tie before heading to overtime, during which Will Bruggiere netted the winning goal in sudden death.

With the Nantucket victory, the Vineyarders advanced to the championship game, where they outplayed Hetland from the opening faceoff. Will turned in two goals, as did Liam Marek. Jack Lionnette scored once, while Oliver Lively had a standout performance in net.

The Mites season (10-7-3) is impressive considering three players returned from last year’s squad. This year’s team were Will Bruggiere, Eli Gundersen, Cam Geary, Mike Wallace, Oliver Lively, Graham Sterns, Dylan Biggs, Riley Sylvia, Jack Lionette, John Coogan, Nick Rego, Micah Simmons, Richie Combra, Liam Marek, Harper Hearn

Two other youth hockey teams took on Nantucket over the weekend, though both fell to their Island rival. The Vineyard Neponset Valley League team fell 5-3 to Nantucket’s NVL squad, while the Peewees lost 4-1. The Peewees came out strong against Nantucket in their league playoff game Saturday, scoring first on a Jacob Gunderson goal (Shay Sullivan landed the assist). Their opponents answered, however, pulling ahead 3-1 by the end of the third and landing an empty-netter for the final score of 4-1 Nantucket. Shay, Auguste Pizzano, and Kylie Hatt turned in strong performances on defense, while Zach Fullin and Cathal Robinson fended off the Nor’easters in net.

The Bantam A squad played an invitational match against Watertown (a AA team) this weekend, taking on the stronger team in preparation for the state championship next weekend (where the Bantams defend last year’s title). The team fell in its first two games, but played to a 3-3 tie in the final game before Watertown scored with seven seconds left.

The House Mites played on home ice in the annual Red Kennedy Tournament this weekend, with the Purple squad playing its first-ever game against the White team. Jacob Clealand scored twice, while Ingrid Gunderson and Radio Goulart also landed goals. Kaleb Hatt notched an assist; Julia Murray turned in a great performance in goal to preserve the 4-3 Purple victory. Chase Grant scored a hat trick to keep the White in the running throughout.

In the second Purple/White game, the White team came out ahead, with Sam Hoyt, Nick Ben David and Ava Ben David scoring in the 3-1 win.

The White team also took on off-Island teams Westfield and Manchester, but fell to their tougher opponents.
