Girls tennis and boys lacrosse and baseball will all play home games this week before the start of April vacation, with tennis taking to the courts today at 3 p.m. and the boys’ teams playing tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.

Baseball

The Vineyarders’ baseball record stands at 1-0, despite playing two games. After traveling to Plymouth South last Wednesday and completing 11 scoreless innings, the teams were forced to reschedule the rest of the game.

“We ran out of daylight,” head coach Gary Simmons said. The squads are scheduled to meet again on Saturday at home, and will finish last week’s game before the rematch, giving the Vineyarders the odd position of being the away team on their own field.

Kicking off the season with an extra-innings game is particularly rough on the pitching staff—Plymouth South’s starter went nine innings—but the Vineyard is “lucky enough to a good talent level with [our] pitchers,” said Coach Simmons. Senior Will Stewart pitched the first five innings, with senior Andrew Williamson and junior Alec Tattersall taking on the remainder of the game. Junior Jack Roberts and senior Stewart Hersh each had a hit.

Last Saturday, the team defeated Nantucket 12-5. Roberts went 2-for-4 with one RBI, one run and one stolen base while also taking the mound for the last three innings. Starting pitcher Ryan Fisher had six strikeouts. Senior Noah Stobie was 3-for-3 with one run and two stolen bases. Stewart went 2-for-3 and had a stolen base.

The team takes on Coyle-Cassidy today before Saturday’s Plymouth South double-header, and will play in the Westwood Tournament on Wednesday and Thursday.

Softball

A runaway win and rough loss greeted the varsity girls at the start of their season, as the team picked up a 17-6 home victory in Monday’s opener against Falmouth but went down 26-0 Tuesday to visiting league opponent Coyle and Cassidy.

Coyle won the Eastern Athletic Conference last year and advanced to the finals of the Divison 2 South Section tournament.

Head coach Donald Herman noted the one bright spot in the Coyle loss: the relative success of the batters, who managed no hits at all in two games against Coyle last year. This year, senior Sarah Williston, junior Micheli Lynn and sophomore Shelby Lavin each had hits, with Lynn and Williston hitting doubles.

The team had no trouble with offense against Falmouth, however, tying the Clippers 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth before combining for 11 more runs before the inning was over. The Vineyarders had 19 hits; juniors Kendall Robinson and Emily Cimeno had four each, while Williston launched a home run over the center field fence and landed a triple. In her first-ever varsity at-bat, Lavin connected for a double.

Junior pitcher Hailee McCarthy notched the win, with two earned runs and two walks in seven innings.

The team is away today and tomorrow, taking on Chatham and Sturgis Charter School.

Girls’ Tennis

In their first match of the season, the girls took a decisive sweep against visiting Sandwich on Monday. Junior Annie Burton, playing in the number one spot, went 6-1, 6-3 against her opponent, with number two Dylan Brockmeyer taking a 6-2, 6-1 win, and number three Alyssa Adler, who was undefeated last season, going 6-2, 6-0. In doubles, Julia Cooper and Annabelle Hackney won 6-1, 7-5, with Wendy Wen and Celia Mercier going 6-4, 6-2. New varsity players Josie Iadicicco, Diamond Araujo, Lily Bick and Charlotte Potter also picked up doubles wins.

The girls play league opponent Coyle and Cassidy today at 3 p.m.

Boys’ Tennis

The boys started the year with a 2-0 record, defeating Somerset 5-0 last Wednesday and Sandwich 4-1 on Monday. Junior Kent Leonard split his week, taking a 6-1, 6-1 win over Somerset and a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Matt Martin of Sandwich. In the number two spot, sophomore Patrick McCarthy won in straight sets against Sandwich’s Jamie Bryant while going 6-0, 6-1 against Somerset.

Number three player Justice Yennie picked up where he left off after last year’s undefeated season, going 6-2, 6-1 against Somerset and 6-1, 6-1 against Sandwich.

The doubles teams of Jackson McBride, Natty Schneider, Justin Smith and Ryan Sawyer swept Somerset in straight sets; against Sandwich, Austin Stevenson and Sean McAndrew took over the number two doubles spot and won 6-4, 6-2.

Scores from Thursday’s matches against Chatham were unavailable at press time. The Vineyarders travel to Coyle and Cassidy today.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Vineyarders moved to a 2-2 season record after splitting this week’s games against Falmouth and Coyle and Cassidy. Falmouth “was a beatable team,” said head coach Chris Greene, but the Vineyard squad “disappeared for a couple quarters,” and had trouble finding the cage in the third, resulting in a 10-6 loss. Senior Colby Gouldrup had two goals and two assists, with junior Nick Costello and Charlie Everett each scoring twice.

The boys fared better against Coyle, avenging last year’s loss with a 16-4 victory. Costello led the Vineyard scoring with four goals and six assists (most coming on senior Denver Maciel’s six goals). Everett landed three goals and three assists, with brothers Sam and Huck Burke scoring one goal apiece. Senior goalie Nelson Dickson had seven saves on 13 shots.

“We’ve clearly learned some things about ourselves offensively,” said Coach Greene. The team hopes to build upon the Coyle success in Saturday’s game against perennial challenger Norwell — “a real test for us,” Coach Greene said. Game time is at 12:30 p.m.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The girls move to a 3-1 record on the season (2-0 in league play) after last week’s games against Oliver Ames and Coyle and Cassidy.

The Vineyarders went back and forth with Oliver Ames, fighting to an 8-8 tie at halftime. Goals by juniors Taylor Poggi (assist by Jennie Lindland) and Alayna Hutchinson (assist by Madison Hughes) put the Vineyarders in the lead, but further rallies by Oliver Ames tied the game again at 13-all with seven minutes remaining. The Vineyarders closed out the game by scoring four of the last six goals and taking the 17-15 win. Hutchinson scored six goals (one assist), while Hughes had four goals and three assists. Lindland, Poggi and Molly Wallace each scored twice; sophomore Isabel Smith also had a goal.

On Tuesday, the team took a 17-6 win over Coyle, with nine different players scoring for the Vineyard.

The girls will next play Bishop Stang in an away game following April vacation.

Track and Field

The boys’ track squad picked up two wins in their first meets of the season, dominating Abington 101-34 in an away meet last week and defeating EAC opponent Somerset 78-60 at home Tuesday. The girls split their meets, winning 75-59 against Abington but falling 81-57 to Somerset.
