A Vineyard Haven man already facing rape charges in Dukes County superior court was indicted by a grand jury Wednesday for allegedly soliciting the murder of a prosecutor.

David L. Thrift was indicted by the grand jury on two counts of solicitation to commit a felony as well as charges of aggravated rape of a child and aggravated rape of a child with force.

According to the indictment filed Wednesday in Dukes County superior court, in November 2011 Mr. Thrift solicited Joseph D’Amelio, a fellow inmate at the Edgartown house of correction, to murder a district attorney as well as one of his alleged victims, a minor.

Mr. D’Amelio was sentenced in October 2011 to two and a half years in prison for trafficking oxycodone. His case originated in Suffolk superior court, not on the Vineyard, but he was sent to the Edgartown house of correction to serve his time.

Carrie Kimball Monahan, spokesman for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett, whose office is trying the Thrift case, said the two rape charges are re-indictments for the same offenses for which Mr. Thrift has already been charged. The new indictments are subject to Jessica’s Law, which has mandatory sentencing requirements.

Ms. Monahan confirmed that Mr. Thrift allegedly offered someone money to kill a district attorney and the minor victim.

Mr. Thrift will be arraigned on the additional charges in late July, she said.

The original rape charges against Mr. Thrift, 30, stem from July 2011, when he allegedly assaulted his wife and then fled his Vineyard Haven house, later returning and raping a 15-year-old female visitor at knifepoint.

Mr. Thrift was already under an abuse prevention order when his wife called the police late on July 23 to report that he had attacked her, according to the police report. The couple, their three young daughters and a 15-year-old female had spent the day on the beach, where Mr. Thrift had been drinking, according to statements recounted in the police report. All had gone to bed when the mother was called to the teenager’s room, where she found her husband. Confronted, he assaulted his wife, according to the report.

Police saw a shirtless man fleeing from the house, and after taking the wife’s statement, took her to the hospital and began searching for Mr. Thrift.

Meanwhile, Mr. Thrift returned to the house and, according to statements given to police, raped the teenager at knifepoint. Police found Mr. Thrift at his home and arrested him.

In November, Tisbury police Sgt. Robert Fiske, the officer in charge when police responded to the scene, was dismissed from his job.

An October superior court trial date was scheduled last week for Mr. Thrift, who is facing ten charges: rape of a child with force, aggravated rape, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon, violation of an abuse prevention order, three charges of assault and battery and two charges of intimidation of a witness.

Ms. Monahan said she believed the four new charges will be added to the other charges Mr. Thrift will face in the October trial.

Mr. Thrift has been incarcerated since his arrest.
