Martha’s Vineyard is, of course, known for its beaches and endless summer breezes. But it is also known for its theatre; after all, the Island has been a haven for artists for, well, what do you think those whalers did for fun?

This weekend the Martha’s Vineyard Museum is opening its latest exhibit paying tribute to the Vineyard’s theatre scene. The exhibit is called Showtime: 100 Years of Theater on Martha’s Vineyard. The opening reception for museum members is today, May 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. The following day the exhibit opens to the public.

The show was created in conjunction with many of the theatre arts groups currently working on the Island, including the Vineyard Playhouse and the Island Theater Workshop. Museum oral history curator Linsey Lee also collected many new oral histories specifically for this exhibit. Smaller satellite exhibitions will open at various sites throughout the summer and into the fall.

To complement the show, theatre programming will also accompany the museum’s summer events line-up. The Vineyard Playhouse is to present historical Vineyard plays in July and August on the museum lawn. Shakespeare for the Masses is creating a brief performance for the Museum’s summer opening reception held on Friday, June 15. The Museum plans to show an adaptation of Shakespeare Othello on August 2, which was filmed on the Island in the 1960’s by Liz White’s Shearer Summer Theater and features an all African American cast led by Yaphet Kotto.

The exhibit runs through April 20, 2013.
