Yoga Festival

The third annual Martha’s Vineyard Yoga Festival is now selling tickets. The event takes place on Labor Day weekend from August 30 to Sept. 3 and features a cast of thousands. Or at least that’s the way it seems based on the both the quantity and quality of instructors, cooks and health professionals taking part in the festival from both on and off-Island.

The festival was founded in 2010 by Kathy Bega and is now produced by Ms. Bega and Mollie Doyle. The main headquarters will be located at the Chilmark Community Center but also include yoga studios all over the Island.

Some highlights from the off-Island contingent include classes taught by Saul David Ray from Los Angeles, Kristin Leigh and Barbara Verrochi from The Shala in New York city, Sara Ivanhoe from Yoganation, Kelly Morris of Conquering Lion, and Toni Melass, the founder of Hatch NYC.

A particular on-Island draw, in addition to the wide array of teachers living here, will be local chef Chris Fischer of Beetlebung Farm who will camp out at the Chilmark Community Center all weekend long, creating a veritable health-food pop-up shop. All the vegetables will be walked over from his farm next door. How’s that for zero carbon footprint!

On Saturday, Sept. 1, Griffin Hughes of The Boathouse will lead a sunset stand-up paddle session on Quitsa pond.

Tickets officially went on sale May 1. Prices range from $20 for a one-hour master class to $40 for a two-hour workshop and $100 for the full day immersion with Saul David Raye. Prices rise $5 after June 1, though, and are $10 dollars more at the door.
