The Vineyard has been awarded $2 million in community development block grants by Gov. Deval Patrick for housing rehabilitation and child care subsidies.

Edgartown, West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah were awarded a total of $1.1 million, while $991,000 went to Tisbury and Oak Bluffs. The money will provide some 50 applicants with money to repair drafty windows and other improvements to make their homes winter-ready. Money is also available for child care subsidies.

Melissa Vincent, who administers the grants through The Resource Inc., said the grant awards come as a huge relief. The Vineyard missed out in the 2012 grant round due to a clerical advertising error.

“We live to fight another day,” Mrs. Vincent said. She said she already has 15 applications from Oak Bluffs and Tisbury and 10 applications from Edgartown, West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah. The two town groups applied collectively.

The Vineyard was one of 46 communities in the state to receive some $26.8 million in block grants, announced by Governor Patrick in Dennis Tuesday morning. The money comes from the state Department of Housing and Community Development, which funnels the federal block grant money to cities and towns. The Island has benefitted from more than $14 million in block grant monies over the past nine years; the funds have been used to rehabilitate 250 homes with leaky roofs or inadequate heating systems and have provided 77 Island families with child care subsidies.

Mrs. Vincent said the grants will be administered starting Sept. 1.
