It began in June of 1929. That was when the publishers of the Vineyard Gazette made the announcement that the newspaper would begin publishing twice a week. “The size and varied interests of Martha’s Vineyard during the summer season seem to warrant a semi-weekly newspaper,” Henry Beetle Hough and Elizabeth Bowie Hough wrote in a letter to readers that year. “There are many respects in which we believe a semi-weekly can be of more usefulness than a weekly, and it is the aim of this newspaper to make itself as useful a factor in the life of the community as it can be.”

Thus began the long tradition of the Tuesday Gazette. That eighty-three-year tradition continues this coming Tuesday when the newspaper will again begin publishing twice a week through August.

A real estate listing in the first Tuesday Gazette read as follows: “For Rent at East Chop. Large, perfectly appointed summer home, directly on the waterfront. $700 season.”

Much has changed on the Vineyard over the years, while much has stayed the same.

To that end, we welcome the start of another summer season. See you Tuesday.
